2008 Begins With Poker Tournaments Everywhere
After the Five Diamond Poker Classic at the Bellagio in December, the poker tournament circuit took a break for
the holiday season. Players set off to spend time with families, friends, and cash games.But as the new year begins, everyone is back in action and forced to choose from numerous events happening around the globe in January. From the Bahamas to Australia, players are making their travel plans along with their 2008 resolutions.
On January 5th, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) main event begins in the Bahamas at the Atlantis Resort and Casino on Paradise Island. For the first time, this event is part of the European Poker Tour instead of the World Poker Tour, and the upcoming PCA is part of the EPT’s fourth season.
Registration begins on January 4th, the same day as the welcome party for all PokerStars qualifiers, their guests, and the media. There will be two Day 1’s on the 5th and 6th, and the final table will play out on the 10th.
The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is one of the most anticipated events of the year due to the buy-in of $8,000 and the minimum age requirement of only eighteen. Last year, Ryan Daut emerged victorious from a massive field of 937 players to take the first prize of more than $1.5 million.
January 5th also marks the start of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia. The series of events includes a wide range of tournaments like $1,100 buy-in no-limit hold’em, $550 buy-in limit stud/stud hi-lo/razz, and $3,250 pot limit Omaha with rebuys. One of the highlights of the series is the $100,000 no-limit hold’em event, which takes place this year on January 12th. It typically attracts some of the biggest names in poker and was won last year by Erick Lindgren.
The Aussie Millions $10,000 main event begins on January 14th and runs for a total of seven days with a $1 million first prize guarantee. Last year’s event culminated in an exciting final table with Gus Hansen coming out on top for a hard-earned victory.
During the latter part of January, the choices for tournament players remain with several events to wrap up the month.
The World Poker Tour hits the road to continue its sixth season of tournaments and stops at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. The $10,000 buy-in main event of the World Poker Open runs from January 20th through 23rd. Preliminary events begin on January 3rd and run until the day before the main event.
Within a few days, the WPT moves on to the Borgata in Atlantic City for the Borgata Poker Classic. The $10,000 buy-in main event there begins on January 27th and finishes with the final table on the 31st. There are preliminary events in the series that begin on January 15th and continue on until the start of the championship tournament.
Finally, players can head back overseas at the end of January for the EPT German Open at the Casino Hohensyburg in Dortmund, Germany. The buy-in is the equivalent of $11,000 and plays out from January 29th to February 2nd.
Hopefully, Santa brought some rest and relaxation for the world’s poker players over the holidays – and possibly some frequent flyer miles and comped hotel rooms – because they’re going to need it all to keep up with the tournament circuit this month!
