When I’m well rested and energized, I play more focused. I make more mistakes when I’m tired, distracted orCyndy Violette photo courtesy of CyndyViolette.com bored. I try to get to the gym at least a few times a week and I always feel better coming out of the gym than I do going in. That’s what motivates me to go.

If you’re a tournament player, you know you must play mistake free poker or you’re out. Most tournaments take 4-6 hours to finish. Bigger fields take even longer to get through. To play optimally, you should be well rested and focused. Serious players know this and are committed to eating healthy, exercising regularly and resting up before taking on a large field.

Cyndy Violette, is a good example of a successful, well known, tournament player living a healthy lifestyle. She’s been a vegetarian for 15 years, read countless books on spirituality and transformation, followed astrology, and practices yoga.

Just some simple changes to your diet and a regular exercise regimen can take you a long way. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym slinging weights or doing cardio either. There are so many exercises you can do at home or you can just spend 30 minutes a day walking. It’s a good reason to get out of the house.

An even better way to burn calories is SEX. Get your wife the book “The Ultimate Sex Diet” by Kerry McCloskey. You’ll thank me later.

There have been times when I was lucky enough to get deep in an online tournament during the early morning hours and did push-ups during breaks to keep my blood flowing. It helped me stay focused and energized. At a WPT Final Table, Mike Sexton said Hoyt Corkins was doing push-ups during a commercial break to stay awake. I incorporated that into my tournament game whenever necessary.

Here are a few other tips. Take a long walk, jog or run before your next big tournament. Get up and stretch during tournament breaks. Sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair to strengthen your back and abs. Get some healthy snacks to munch on while you play. Pick up some fruit such as grapes, apples, blueberries to snack on.

Try making a few changes to your daily routine and diet. It can help you at the tables.
