World Poker - Uruguay
The Eastern Republic of Uruguay is the smallest nation in South
America, encompassing just 68,036 square miles. Located in the southeastern part of South America, bordered by Brazil, Argentina, and the South Atlantic Ocean, Uruguay is home to almost four million people, of which 88% are of European descent.Uruguay is classified as a developing country with a middle income economy. The country relies on exports for most of its income, mainly in the agricultural sector, which leaves it very vulnerable to slumps in commodity prices and global economic downturns.
As with most other countries in South America, gambling is a popular pastime, especially with tourists at the beach resorts. This is evident by the 18 casinos located within the different regions of Uruguay. These include casinos in Artigas, Atlantida, Carmelo, Chui, Fray Bentos, La Paloma, Montevideo, Paysandu, Piriapolis, Punta del Este, Riviera and Salto Grande.
The largest city in Uruguay, Montevideo, offers two casinos, the Casino de Estado Victoria Plaza and the Hipódromo Nacional de Maroñas.
Poker is very popular in Uruguay, as it is throughout South America. Many of the casinos have poker rooms, which offer Texas Hold’em as well as regularly scheduled tournaments.
