Absolute Poker Spokesperson Liv Boeree is Ladbrokes Ladies Champ

On May 3rd and 4th, exactly 53 of the top female poker players in the world gathered in London for
the third annual Ladbrokes European Ladies Championship. And out of a field that included players like WSOP Europe main event champion Annette Obrestad, it was Liv Boeree who won the title.
Boeree’s name may sound familiar, and it is because she is the UK Ambassador for online poker site Absolute Poker. She became the face of Absolute Poker in the United Kingdom in February of 2008 and gained popularity for her accomplishments outside of poker, namely her college degree in astrophysics and her career choice to become a model. While she touted her poker skills to the eye-rolling of some in the poker community, she proved herself beyond any doubt by winning the Ladbrokes tournament.
“I’m utterly over the moon about winning the European Ladies Championships,” said Boeree in a statement. “It was a fantastic tournament with a great sense of camaraderie and a really tough final table that I enjoyed playing from start to finish. This is also a great boost to my confidence going into the World Series of Poker which is drawing ever closer.”
Boeree has had some success in European poker tournaments in the past, but the $2000 buy-in Ladbrokes European Ladies Championship brought her into the limelight due to the event’s popularity. For her win, she was awarded a trophy and $30,000 in cash, in addition to a seat in the 2008 World Series of Poker main event.
Lucy Sergides, Ladbrokes Poker Events Manager, noted, “The ELC is now firmly established as one of the most prestigious women only tournaments in Europe and we couldn’t have wished for a better field. At the last count there were three top sponsored players from rival sites in the field and they all agree that the standard of play was excellent.”
The third annual event was such a success that organizers are considering allowing more players to compete in years to come. While adjustments may have to be made in the London Studios where the tournament is filmed, the demand from women wanting to play in future events is so great that Ladbrokes may decide to expand the field.
