The Round Table – Humberto Brenes Puts his Shark to Good Use
Humberto and PokerStars help Latin American Poker Tour players help the sharks.

Team PokerStars Pro Humberto Brenes is joining forces with PokerStars to support a vital campaign against shark finning. This inhumane practice, which involves cutting off a shark's fins while they are still alive and discarding the body, causes the death of over 200 million sharks per year. It is also responsible for a 90% decline in shark populations worldwide during the last 50 years.
Now Humberto is urging all poker players at LAPT San José to pledge 1% of their wins to the Costa Rican shark conservation charity Pretoma. He will match this donation dollar for dollar, and the combined sum will be matched by PokerStars.
Pretoma is a Costa Rican nonprofit organization that was established in 1997. They launched their campaign against shark finning in 2001. According to the website, “After years of activism, Costa Rican now has progressive and efficient legislation against shark finning that has gained the country international recognition.”
Pokerstars held a press conference in Costa Rica on Thursday May 22nd to explain the importance of this cause. LAPT president Glenn Cadematori joined Humberto at a Pokerstars adorned poker table to raise awareness and to welcome everyone to the country. They invited all players to sign up for the campaign and they are selling baseball caps for $10.
Humberto said, "Costa Rica's greatest treasure is its natural resources. I love my country and, thanks to poker, I have the opportunity to help protect our natural wealth. In the poker world, I am known as "The Shark" and now - through our LAPT San José campaign, I can help protect the real sharks."
