Charity Report: Ivey to Host Charity Tournament at Golden Nugget July 1st
The Budding Ivey Foundation has been busy since its formation earlier this year. After donating funds
to Empowered 2 Excel and an organization that assists the Salvation Army, Phil Ivey has put together another event for his foundation on behalf of Empowered 2 Excel. It will take place on July 1st at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas. The charity poker tournament will be a part of the evening-long festivities known as the Sixth Annual World Series of Barbecue (WSOB), which is hosted every year by Steve Zolotow and Howard and Suzie Lederer. Beginning at 6pm on July 1st, the festival will consist of catered food and beverages, games, a raffle, live and silent auctions, a Guitar Hero exhibition, and live country music entertainment. There will also be a series of chess matches in which guests are invited to participate. Proceeds from this portion of the evening will be donated to the Budding Ivey Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas.
At 8pm, the Budding Ivey Foundation Charity Poker Tournament will begin, hosted by Phil Ivey. It will be a $1,000 no-limit hold’em tournament that will offer $500 optional rebuys during the first three 20-minute rounds, along with a $500 add-on at the end of the rebuy period. The first place prize has been donated by a sponsor and will be valued at $10,000, and other prizes will be available to tournament finalists. All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Budding Ivey Foundation to benefit Empowered 2 Excel.
The evening’s activities will take place at “The Tank,” which is the new pool shark aquarium at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas, but it will move to the new The Grand event center for the tournament. Early registration is encouraged due to expectations of high turnout.
The Budding Ivey Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phil Ivey and his mother, Pamela Simmons-Ivey to fulfill the philanthropic wishes of Phil’s grandfather, Leonard “Bud” Simmons. In his honor, the foundation aims to help the underrepresented, at-risk, and needy members of society, mainly by helping organizations that offer enrichment and educational programs that help children and their families work toward rewarding and self-sufficient futures.
Phil Ivey noted, “Right now, we are focused on raising funds for Empowered 2 Excel. The North Las Vegas children’s academy closed its doors this spring due to a lack of funds. We want to see those doors open again.”
Empowered 2 Excel is a faith-based educational program with a mission to promote academic excellence, build character, and encourage wellness in youth through positive reinforcement. The E2E Academy has been established for students in the kindergarten through fifth grade range and is currently accepting enrollment for the upcoming school year.
