Moving Up In Limits

1Moving up can be one of the most difficult steps in advancing your game and your bankroll. While some players are content to stay at lower limits throughout their playing career, others want to jump into higher limits as fast as possible. Moving up a limit can be very difficult.

A higher limit may increase your bankroll but it can have the opposite effect and erase all of your hard work in a short time if you aren’t prepared for the swings and the difference in player skill. If you are a serious player and want to move up, the first step is to build and maintain a bankroll for the limit you want to play. How do you build a bankroll? The best way is to take a realistic percentage of each win and reinvest it into your bankroll, whether you have a job or are playing for a living. While you could put everything you win into your bankroll, you may have other wants and needs that your poker wins will help you accomplish.

Play at a limit you are comfortable with – even if it takes a few years - until you feel your bankroll can handle the swings of a higher limit, and until you feel you are mentally ready to move up to a higher limit - the strength of play changes dramatically as the limits increase. Higher limit games are often played short handed vs. lower limit games that are usually full. Card values change dramatically in short handed games and while playing in higher limits, the swings can be brutal…especially on your bankroll.

If you are playing well and ‘running good’, an occasional step into a higher limit game can be financially rewarding and give you a taste of the action and what to expect. But before you make the move permanent, take the time to assess your skill level, your bankroll, and check your records - always keep records of your play – at all levels. The old saying Know Thyself is the best monitor for knowing when to move up in limits.
