Poker Media’s Spinal Tap
The poker media has grown - but you can hardly make the argument that it has matured. At this point, junior high school girls have more on the poker media, as evidenced by the latest media spat. Somehow I doubt that Time and Newsweekchosepublic name calling as their competitiveweapon of choice.
While things have never been particularly chummy in the poker media’s equivalentto the girl’s bathroom, the latest chapter is just - well - downright embarrassing.Talk about being caught with your proverbial pants down.CardPlayer Magazine locked up some of the most exclusive media rights forthe 2006 WSOP. The (well founded) rumors have been swirling for weeks thatrival Bluff Magazine scored the WSOP exclusives for2007. Pokerbiz reported the rumor, only to have a poster named “Artie Fufkin” (think Spinal Tap) submit a comment; trashing both Bluff and the WSOP. But you know, boyz and girlz, pokerbiz isan internet site. And they actuallyknow some stuff about the internet - like knowing how to trace the ip address of “anonymous” posters. A little Whois magic showed Fufkin’s comment had originated from Card Player’s offices. Pokerbiz shows the comment andtheir ether detective work here. Anotherposter named “David St Hubbins” (Yes - Spinal Tap again) left a comment, speculatingabout the specific CP source.
This is Spinal Tap was an ingenious farce;exposing the music industry’s frailties in an absurdly funny mock rockumentary. Unfortunately the poker media’s version of ST lacksthe satire and humor of its namesake, leaving us with just the frailties.
