April’s Fools and Heros

With the first of April falling on a Sunday (the slowest of all web days), there was a dearth of poker blog foolishness this year. But I was happy to see that F-Train set up his readers nicely. And yes, I bought it hook, lineand sinker; having it dawn on me just short of setting up my TiVo.My own foolish attempt was taken seriously by a few, butboth Change and Gracie saw throughmy UIGEA “news”story in relatively short order.

The secret to a good April Fool’s ruse is believability.F-Train would have indeed been asolid choice for a 60 Minutes story about online gaming. And with the current UIGEA loopholes, my own story about an Indian Reservation-wide online poker network might, some day, be a reality. There, of course, is no Manajiwin tribe near Detroit. The word “manajiwin” means “respect” in Ojibwe, an Algonquian language. I guess I chose that word because ifFrist had an ounce of it for the constituents he swore an oath to serve, or felt a modicum of responsibility to establish meaningful law,we wouldn’t be here today.

As far as April’s heros go, Change already wrote about two; Gavin Griffin and PokerStars. From some of the biggest name pros to the more nefarious bloggers, the poker community puts itself out there on the “good cause” front.

Pauly is another ofmy unsung herosthis month.Much of PokerNews’ coverage team for Monte Carlowasdecimated by a rash of thrown out backs (conspiracy theorists may weigh in at any time), leaving Pauly to cover the EPT’s Grand Finale pretty much on his own.He was further hampered by 9 euro beers and 26 euro hamburgers.Fourteen hour day after fourteen hour day, Pauly captured it all – and evenhad the presense of mind to slip in the occasionalP.O.B. reference. And after logging in way too many hours at PokerNews, he still made sure to post pictures of buxom Swedish gals on his own blog. You rocked dude.

I’m also happy toreport that in this season of resurrection, PokerBlogis undergoing a second coming of sorts. This Party sponsored fledgling blog was once the home of many a degenerate blogger. But with the passage of the UIGEA, thebaby blog was thrown out with the UIGEA bathwater. I find it interesting that Party is sticking itstoes back into US internet waters once more. But for now I’ll just read the blog, and try not to read too much into why it has returned.
