Take Five
After my fifth day at the WSOP, I came “home,” hopped into bed, and plugged into Dave Brubeck’s Time Out. I definitely needed a mellow, but clever, vibe to end my day. I’ve heard both Brubeck’s Quartet and Brubeck’s son Dan’s group, The Dolphins, perform Take Five live a few times - but not for a number of years now.   ÂÂ
Having done the WSOP gig for a few years, I’ve come to expect a roller coaster of moods - brought on by long hours, great poker, stress, and stress relievers.  To deal with the swings, I bring a wide range of music with me. I was optimistic this year. I didn’t bring the more self-destructive end of the collection; I left the likes of Morphine at home.  I also wanted this to be a period of reflection, so I stuck with some of my older classics. This year’s selection includes Stevie Ray Vaughan, Shirley Horn, Nirvana, Artie Shaw, Tom Waits, Santana, Little Feat, Sinatra, Kristy MacColl, a few tracks off the very funky Brazillian collection Samba Soul ‘70,  Average White Band, Was Not Was (great version of “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”), Etta James, and Diana Krall. ÂÂ
The wind cut through Vegas like a knife today, finally forcing the evacuation of the Rio’s temporary building. They are obviously not going to be able to use that building tonight. But based on the bashing it got, I wonder how much structural damage was done to it. Me? I’m not going back in there unless a building inspector does first.ÂÂ
To some extent I can’t believe it’s already Day Five today.  I know there are 40 more long days, but the WSOP seems to be moving so fast this year. Maybe I won’t still feel that way on Day 33 - but for now I almost feel that it is passing by too quickly for me to absorb and properly appreciate it. But as Scarlett O’Hara said, “I can’t think about that right now. If I do, I’ll go crazy. I’ll think about that tomorrow.” ÂÂ
And for today, I’ll just take five.ÂÂ

The last time I saw Brubeck live was many years ago. It was at the London House in Chicago. The company I worked for had offices nearby and I had to show up at the office on Fridays. It was a snowy night and the expressways were a mess. Rather than face that I hit the nightclub and was there with a crowd of a good half dozen including the bartender and one waitress left. Great evening. Stayed later than I should. You could walk over and shoot the bull with the group between numbers and sets. Very enjoyable take five.

Nice ad for a few “struggling” musos - did u play with any of them - musically that is?
However unless Tom Waits has gone glam pop I personally would give him a wide berth in LV - he’s a “bit” edgy in my opinion
