Phone Call with Sweetie at the Main Event

Monday, July 31st, 2006
A2_Gang.JPG

I had a voice mail from the Big Guy, my ten-year old. The cell coverage here in the Media Room is pretty poor, so often I’ll walk out only to find a few voice mails. I get so busy running and typing that I’ll go a whole day without talking to anyone. Other times, I’ll be on the phone with Sweetie but distracted as I’m jumping around. (l to r: Big Guy, Sweetie, Little Guy, All-in)

I went out to the hall until I found a quiet place and took a seat on the marble floor. I pushed 2 on the cell, and up popped All-in answering the phone. They went to the Georgia Aquarium today, then headed to the Varsity for grease food. All-in and I talked for quite awhile, which is fairly unusual. The Little Guy got on the phone, and we went through our phone communication process. First thing is to say many different words from the previous hours with hopes he’ll grab one and start jabbering (he turned two in May and is hardly a quiet fellow). Baby beluga was the secret word, and out came a ton of indecipherable gobbly-gook that was a sweet serenade on the ears. We talked about something for ten minutes (not sure what the something was), and then the Big Guy was on the phone. A bit of an anticlimax as he sat in front of the computer and tried to talk to me (now I know what Sweetie feels like when she talks to me!). All-in and the Big Guy are going to Memphis to visit my parents and sister’s family. Thursday through Tuesday maybe, I’m not sure.

Sweetie and I had a great chat. She had gone here to the blog as well as had gone to the Year in Review link. “I tried to just see things about me and skip anything to do with numbers. There were pretty depressing parts, too,” she said. Which is true to say the least. For probably ten years of our marriage, I travelled 60-80% of the time. It has slacked off in the last fifteen months, although the WSOP coverage has been a bit rougher for her with the boys out of school.

marshman88 is my friend, which is great to have in a brother-in-law. He lets me tag along with ATM Will and other friends, and he’s someone that I really enjoy having breakfast with or joining in a game of poker. His friends have started moving on to jai alai and calf roping as the next hip thing to do in G-Vegas, so he’s also starting to drift away from poker a bit. He also has someone special in his life now, which is all good.

My brother Econ is my biggest fan, and I his. He is passionate about poker, and he’s really been a great source of encouragement for me in all of this.

My father (back to us) is a great source of support at all time for me, constantly sending an email here or there with good things to say. And my mom? She’s my mom. I’m a Momma’s boy at heart anyways.

The End of the Beginning

We’ve just kicked off Day 1D, the final first day of the Main Event.  Unofficial official number of entrants:  8,774.  I’m not sure if there will be any more added to the number, but that’s a good number to recite to folks.

I am so worn out but I need to get this up. I’ll have a uber post about the weekend and first days of the Main Event, but I just don’t have it in me right now. Or maybe I do have it in me, I don’t know. I just found out that the event ended for the day fifteen minutes ago, which means that there are 900 players looking for cabs. Which means I’m stuck.

WSOP Main Event Day 1C: It’s Ladies Day at the Rio

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

A1_JenTilly.JPG

It doesn’t look too different than the Ladies Event earlier this year as women seemed to be out in force at the tables today. Women at the poker table have gone beyond being a novelty at the poker table to becoming fierce, competitive players. Men who understimate girls do so at their own peril.

WSOP Main Event Day 1B

I rode over with Pauly and C.J. in Pauly’s PT Cruiser. I went to bed too late and got up too early, but it’s all good. I had a Barq’s this morning before hopping in the car with Pauly, which was a great way to start the day.

Day 1B: Hellmuth May Be Late, but Ivey’s in the House

A1_Crowd.JPG

Day 1A started alot more smoothly for the staff as everyone knew how to handle the flow of traffic, alternates, spectators, everything. They only let players in the room for the first two hours, and the doors don’t open until 11:30. 2,000+ people squeezing into one door is alot, especially as they left another 4,000 folks in their wake to sweat them through the walls.

It’s 2:17AM, and I avoided putting a photo of Layne Flack up just because his visor looks so horrible with his hair.

Afternoon and Into the Night

Barry Greenstein was one of the name pros selecting Day 1A to get started at the World Series of Poker Main Event. It wasn’t the crazy online donkfest of maybe two years ago, but the room was slam-filled with players, railbirds, and alternates.

How I Changed the World Series of Poker

A2_FeatureTable.JPG
After James Garner told the players, “Gentlemen, start your engines,” I sweated the ESPN Feature Table for the first level.  I used to have 20/20 eyesight, but alas it is deteriorating before my eyes.  It’s very difficult to sit and watch the feature table as you can’t really see chips or cards unless they are showing them on one of the screens.
