Heading for the Cash: Analysis of the Remaining Field and An Open Question Regarding M

How much is $14,597? If you had a chance to sit on your hands for six hours to then be given that much, would you do it? Or would you play a game where you throw marbles across a ballroom and see if you could get more marbles in a circle than other competitors? Well, that’s what is confronting many of the 1,159 players who have the day off today.

The rhetoric from top pros and aspiring players alike is a common chorus: I didn’t come here to cash, I came to win. For those who came here virtually for free (either on freerolls or winning satellites with less than a $50 buy-in), they came here first to cash, to turn their nothing into something. After they cash, then they can figure out what to do next.

I took a power nap earlier, and I think I have a fairly crisp pitch to walk through with the client at 10:30AM Eastern. I never go over research results on a telecon, so I’ve just shown them samples of the work. Don’t know how it will be received, but hopefully it will be enough to get our work session scheduled.

The Amazon Room of the Rio and all its surrounding areas are devoid of humanity. Two cash games going on the 218 tables, no people milling around. They just bought pastries and coffee, but I don’t see any press folks coming in to consume any of this.

OK, that little bit was around 6:30, it’s now 8:30 here and the call went well. Client is back engaged, and I have some more time to do work on the final report that they’ll receive after the WSOP. More articles and stuff to write here, but I’ve pushed through and the call went well. Here are some analysis of the Day 3 participants that you may find useful. I think it’s pretty intriguing stuff:

  • Number of players left: 1,159
  • Largest Stack: $549.2k
  • Smallest Stack: $1.1k
  • Average Stack: $76k
  • Median Stack: $64.2k
  • Number of players to nuke before cashing: 286
  • Blinds when resume (1 hour): $600/1200 w/ $200 ante (pot is $3,800)
  • Number of players starting with M of <5: 71
  • M between 5 and 10: 129
  • M between 10 and 15: 213
  • M’s as above after an hour (blinds of $800/1600 +200): 108/257/243
  • Top ten chipleaders hold 3.8% of chips in play
  • Top 10% of chips held by 30 players
  • Top 25% of chips helf by 106 players
  • Bottom 10% of chips held by 113 players

So a few open questions that I’d like some input on while I’m sleeping here in a few minutes.

  1. What do you do if you have $25k in chips?
  2. What do you do if you have $100k in chips and are here on a small satellite?
  3. What do you do if you have $225k in chips?
  4. What happens tomorrow?

Photo of my gay shirt in the famous Rio men’s bathroom. I think this is some really good stuff if I do say so myself. I’ll work on an article as well, but I’d really like your thoughts on this. I’m heading to sleep. Thanks so much for stopping by. SWAG ALERT: Doyle’s Room bag for your leisure. Claim with comment and email to csquard@gmail.com. Thanks for helping me get through the night.

  1. Ed Brayton says:

If you\’re a small stack and you\’re anyone but Phil Ivey, you play very tight and hope to make the money. If you\’re a medium sized stack, say 100K, you attack the blinds when you have position and avoid playing any big pots unless you\’ve got aces or kings. If you\’re a large stack, you attack both the smaller stacks and the medium sized stacks, reraising the medium sized stacks if they\’re attacking the blinds from early or middle position, knowing that the small stacks won\’t play anything but the best hands to avoid going out, and knowing that the medium sized stacks don\’t want to become small stacks. For the big stacks, this is the day to accumulate chips with aggressive play when you\’ve got position against the right players.
