My First Decent Day

Monday, September 18th, 2006

I had my first relatively sizable winning session in quite awhile, +$456 on Friday playing $10/20 and $5/10 H.O.R.S.E. on PokerStars.  I’ve really steered clear of playing any regular stakes during my NLHE experiment, and I just decided last week that I was going to put in more hours playing LHE at $5/10 mainly.  My H.O.R.S.E. seems to continue to be successful.

“I Never Post Hand Histories…”

Friday, September 15th, 2006

My brother gave me a link to Paul Phillips on Jamie Gold, which also links to the radio interview with Gold from a few weeks ago. Hmmm. If you want to like Gold, then don’t listen to this interview. I keep editing this post as I listen to this interview. Uhh, he’s maybe not that humble? Some real gems: “If you’re familiar with NLHE, players normally play 5% of their hands.” It never stops, it may be the longest stretch of self adulation since Narcissus.

State of My Poker Union

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

In management circles, one of the tools that I use is a Dashboard, a collection of metrics (key measures) to quickly state where a business is, functioning like a cockpit dashboard of various information important for flight.  Often we put a red/yellow/green rating, so that executives can quickly see if they’re in trouble or not.  Here’s my quick assessment of where I am, and I’d appreciate any thoughts.

Shakira, Shakira!

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Sweetie had two tickets at Philips Arena to see Shakira last night, and I’d been looking forward to it since I got them.  I was able to get in some poker before, and it was a story of what could have been.  I played $10/20 HORSE on Stars, had run up a $500 win only to give most of it back before I had to get ready.  I lost a big Razz hand with 5-4-3-2 as my first four cards, caught between two raising maniacs who capped the first two betting rounds.  I couldn’t get there, and it was a monster $588 pot after it was all done.  It was my first time to play HORSE at a significant level, and I felt comfortable.

Home Game and Online Recap

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

I’m starting a rather difficult series Thursday entitled:  Pursuit of Achievement to Life Lethargy.  It’s building on the struggles that I mentioned last week but diving in pretty deep, all searching for the causes of how I’ve gotten to where I am now and can I take actions to change things for the future.  Not exactly uplifting stuff, so if anyone wants to skip the next week or so, feel free.

9/11

Monday, September 11th, 2006

I was home officing five years ago, my consulting business just finishing its first year of existence. I’d taken two employees with me to start the company, but I ended up working to pay their very hefty salaries as they brought no business in. Not a good business model. The dot com meltdown was in full stride as my hefty portfolio had all but evaporated, and the US economy had slipped into recession. I didn’t know it but the signs were there for me, including tough business conditions as I tried to scrounge for new clients.

Tentative: The CC Classic on Thursdays

Friday, September 8th, 2006

My home game is on tap tonight, opening up the most beautiful yet least used poker room in the United States. The room is still not complete, as I’m waiting for our IT guy to come and finish networking the photo printer so I can print the top photos from the WSOP for the walls. As always, not a full room expected, but I won’t let it dampen the experience. We have definite confirmation for five with a potential of four more, so that’s all fine by me.

A Good Bad Evening

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

It was a special Mookie last night as 66 people showed up to fork over their $22 for a chance to give to a family facing difficult times.  I know Mook’s expectations were considerably less, but I’m so glad we blew away my goal of 50 players. I’m pretty sure we ultimately raised around $1,500 last night playing poker, so a great job to all.  And how did I go busto?  At the hands of Andy Bloch.

The WSOP on ESPN & Welcome Tony G

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

A big welcome to Tony G to the PokerWorks blog family. We’ve all seen him, but now we’ll get to know him here at PokerWorks. I’m still 0 for 5 on being on television, but the WSOP broadcasts on ESPN seem to be getting a bit better. More poker and less fluff, although ESPN continues to focus on the few name players like Annie Duke and Humberto Brenes. My own take again is that they need to revamp the broadcasts, need to dig deeper to get in front of some of the big stories that end up emerging. That being said, I finally watched a bit more of the episode rather than just fast forward looking for myself (I’m stupid–what do you want me to do?).

Where Has It All Gone?

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

A great weekend, never breaking open my laptop in the mountains north of G-Vegas.  Sometimes, you need that sort of respite/break, so I’ll take it.  Got to watch the end of the Georgia Tech game (what could have been) as well as the end of the Florida State-Miami game.
