CC’s Thursday Bash 2007 Edition

Two freerolls are available into tomorrow night’s CC’s Thursday Bash (9:30PM EST on PokerStars, $10+1 NLHE). I’ve lowered the buy-in to get a rowdier crowd, and here is how you qualify for the freeroll drawing:

Pimp my ride. Pimp CC’s Thursday Bash on your blog or website, including putting the banner up. Then shoot me an email with the link at csquard@gmail.com. All those received by 4:00PM tomorrow are eligible for the drawing to be held at 4:30PM. Include your PokerStars screen name, and I’ll transfer $11 to your account and let you know you’re the winner by 5:00PM.

Leave a comment. Give me your best answer to the following question: What is the one area that you are working on improving in your tournament play? Again, all comments received by 4:00PM Thursday are eligible for the second drawing, and I’ll post some of the best answers on Friday.

That’s it. Two free seats to the first event of the year, as well as a rowsing night of pokah.

I’m working on an article on HU play which is fast becoming a new addictive game for some of us. I’ll let you know if it’s up this week, as I’m sure everyone is waiting with baited breath. Short and sweet, so later! Might come back with an addendum later.

I’m taking a three-pronged approach to improving my MTT play:

    1) Sit under a pyramid-shaped hat to channel the power of the cosmos and direct the energies into disabling my opponent’s internet connection.
    2) Get the cat to sacrifice small woodland creatures to the Poker Gods on my behalf.
    3) Surround myself with a collection of amulets and lucky charms. Also, eat a bowl of Lucky Charms.

I am working on improving my value betting the river. Believe I left a few of Jeff Madsen’s chips in his stack at Aussie Millions by not betting river (was overly wary of him trapping me)

I pimped the tournament. I feel dirty.

  4. Mark Says:

I’ve been making sure to take the lead in betting, trying to force the action rather than allowing myself to be run over by players who bluff with CRAP!!!!
I’ve also decided to jump at anything with the word "freeroll" in it.

The one area that I am working on improving in my tournament play is reducing my VP$IP percentage. Even when looking at a small sample size of SnGs from 2007, there is a correspondence between VP$IP and your tournament results. Case in point: In 3 SnGs, I finished in 3rd, 5th, and 7th positions. My respective VP$IP%s for those three tournaments were 16%, 43%, and 48%. The correlation is not a coincidence. I won exactly 4 hands in the only SnG in which I finished in the money (three of those were pocket pairs, and the other was a K-high that was checked down), but by waiting for premium hands, I did not lose small portions of my stack by playing marginal hands. I could then put those chips into good use doubling up later when I caught good hands. This is the main area I am focusing on this year as I play SnG tournaments. It also applies to MTTs as well.

"What is the one area that you are working on improving in your tournament play?"

    Answer: Staying awake.

  7. Kajagugu Says:

I am focusing on three things:

    1) Playing tight/aggressive in the early stages (instead of my normal loose/weak combo).
    2) I am reading H on H and starting to understand inflection points better (not just for me but for other players actions).
    3) I am trying to learn how to get away from trouble hands.

Also pimped the bash on my blog. Hope to see you at the tables tomorrow…

  8. DP Says:

I pimped your Thursday Bash and sent you an email!

  9. DP Says:

For the second part, my answer to "What is the one area that you are working on improving in your tournament play?"

My "joke" answer: Luck boxing my way into a huge score by better predicting which rags I can move in with preflop to win a huge pot with.

My answer: My mid-game tournament play (especially in MTTs) needs a lot of improvement if I intend to become a good tournament player. When the blinds get high and I’m still out of the money, I tend to play either too aggressive or too tight which results in me rarely cashing in any given MTT I play. At this particular moment, I try and combat my mid-game tournament inability by playing super loose aggressive early on to try and get a big stack. With a big stack, I make less mistakes in the mid-game if I’m able to get lucky early on, since I feel most comfortable playing cash games.

    CC,

anyway we can get a CC Bash on FTP?

    Whaddup!?

Being the King of Trailer Park Poker, its very hard to actually recognize any gaps in my overly strong game… *cough cough* *Gag* *wheeze*

But, if I had to choose something which I would like to improve upon, I’d have to say that I need to learn how to stay in the game come bubble time. I need to learn that I do not have to go all in with the 2nd best hand even if it is a str8 flush come bubble time.

    Take Care,

  12. Falstaff Says:

I’m working on selective aggression in my tournament game. I am trying to cut down on the amount of calling or "taking off one card" in the early rounds, and generally tightening up my play. I reraise more, and play my strong hands harder. I am focusing quite a bit on the concepts of aggression and playing for the win, rather than for the cash. I’ve been playing tighter than a duck’s arse early, while not being afraid to mix it up with my big hands or big draws.

  13. Biggestron Says:

    Oh, the question.

I am trying to find worse players to play against. I’m glad to see Falstaff will be there tonight ;-)

  14. pokerpeaker Says:

It’s so funny to me to read how many are trying to "tighten" up. After reading many poker books, my goal is to loosen up, and that’s why I’ve played $5.50 SnGs in the last two months. I’m working on attacking small pots and weakness all the time, and it’s worked now. I"m no longer needing great cards to win. I’m bluffing with regularity. But I need to work on stealing a lot more. I’m still afraid to go into it without decent cards, so in a way I’m still reliant on getting a good hand. Post-flop I’m as aggressive as anyone, but pre-flop I still need to steal more, especially when we’re on the bubble, when I tend to tighten up. Stealing at the right time, then, is what I’m still working on.

  15. sirfwalgmans Says:

I am working on having my 95% favorite hands hold up. It is hard work and I keep failing but one day I hope to succeed like you my Hero CC!

  16. lightning36 Says:

I am working on tightening up my game all around. I actually declined to play a few of may favorite "junk hands" at the last Mookie, and pushed several times before my chipcount got too low — something I have failed to do in some other tournaments.

  17. Jestocost Says:

I think it’s too late to win, but I thought I’d post anyway. To improve my MTT play, I’m working on minraising in EP pre-flop, open folding on the flop and value checking behind on the river.

No, seriously, three things I’m focused on improving my use of are restealing, the stop-and-go, and the squeeze play.
