The Important Questions before WSOP

I have a place to stay and a gameplan, now what are some of the other oddball things I need to figure out?

Here are a few:

  1. Rent a car or buy a tank?  Mean Gene and I will be splitting the rental of a car as Dan will be driving out.  Best deal I can find for renting a car for the duration is $1.3k or so.  I have yet to find some screaming rental deal which got me to thinking:  should I just buy a car?  Pros and cons?  What do I do afterwards?
  2.  Should I bring my sticks?  I have hardly played any golf in the last two year, with the best my handicap reached was a 9.  I don’t want to bring clubs for the heck of it as it will be a pain (and I may have to pay to fly them).  I also don’t want to kill myself like I did last year and need to have some sort of retreat.
  3. Should I find an intern?  This would come out of my own pocket but could be a financially viable option, potentially making me more productive depending on who I can find and what I could pay.  I’m pretty sure I can get them a media pass and can keep them busy, especially if I can find a hottie who can attract the attention of players.  I think Pauly tried to pull this off a couple years ago, but nothing happened that I know of.  Of course we’re at a week before the tourney, but better late than never as they say.
  4. What can I plan to physically survive?  One recommendation I made to Harrah’s that I hope happens is the ability to reserve a chair and table space in the Media Room (so that I don’t have to arrive at noon every day after leaving at 5:00AM).  It was a horrific time last year, especially during my first stay when I basically almost never slept for about ten days.
  5. What should I churn out in addition to articles?  I’m planning either a daily or 3x/week email for people who are blocked from poker sites at work.  I posted a ton of photos on my blog last year, but I’m not sure if that is value-added (or if it would be better to post them on Flickr).  What else would you be interested in as far as outputs?  What should this blog capture vs. the articles?
  6. How much should I play?  Last year I played very little, probably twice during each ten day stay at the Rio plus once at the Bellagio.  Add in my one $2k WSOP event and that still wasn’t much.  I’ve thought about playing satellites more this time.  I definitely want to play in a couple events rather than just one and the cheaper the better.
  7. Could I actually shed serious pounds and get in shape while I’m there?  I’m a bloated walrus right now with zero physical fitness.  I’d love to lose instead of gain some pounds.  My knee prevents any running, and it should be pretty sore while I’m on my feet alot.

As a reminder, email me at csquard@gmail.com if you’d like to be on distribution for any emails.  Also, let me know if you’ll be playing (what events, when you get in).

Share the intern over a few people.

    1) buy a car then sell it on eBay. List it the week before you leave. You’ll be able to recoup most of what you pay for it. Just get a junker with A/C. That’s all you need.
    2) No. In a tourist destination enough places will rent sticks (although I don’t know – are you a lefty?) and worst case you can befriend a pro and get them to lend you a set.
    3) Yes. Get anyone/anything that can pick up some of your slack. If nothing else it’s someone to fetch water/food/claim your spot in the media room.
    4) Don’t be there 20 hours out of every day. Find time to get out. No really, OUT. Don’t fry yourself doing this. Remember, you got into this because it was fun.
    5) Don’t kill yourself. Post as many articles as you can, but no point in dying. Photos are great, but 2-3 per post and then a flickr link is my preferred reading style.
    6) Play at least 2 hours every three days. Gotta break it up more. Go for some of the satellites and play more events.
    7) No. You can maintain but it’s unreasonable to try and shed serious pounds in a 6-week time frame. Make a trip to the gym part of your daily downtime from the tournament floor and that will help. Take 2 hours out of the middle of each work day to go to the gym, relax and shower. Any event that you miss while you’re gone Geno can cover, that’s why you added a person, remember?
See you in a couple weeks, buddy!

Hey, if you buy a car, the Acura RDX is pretty sweet. True, at 38K it’s a bit pricey, but the resale is probably pretty good. Or a Porsche! I hear they’re nice.
I’m hoping to drop a few while I’m in Vegas as well. I lost 3 pounds in a week in Aruba, but I also had a cold. We’ll have to stock the fridge with fresh fruit and veggies. No beer. Morning calisthenics.
