Rodrigo y Gabriela
I was surfing around iTunes when I stumbled upon this truly amazing guitar duo, Rodgrigo y Gabriela.
We used to have a YouTube deal where the image would show up, so I’ll just give you the following links on YouTube to check out:
Tamacun Live (in Ireland)
Diablo Rojo (on Letterman) brings the house down, and Letterman is pretty speechless afterwards.
Since we’re on this, my favorite guitarist ever, Stanley Jordan. He went to Princeton, where Sweetie and I lived after we were married. I never saw him there but caught him at a club in New York City, one of the most incredible musical events I’ve ever seen. Probably like seeing The Police in some club when Outlandos d’Amour came out or something like that.
Eleanor Rigby, the original
Autumn Leaves (Montreal Jazz Festival, Jordan plays two guitars at once)
I’d forgotten how great he is.
Autumn Leaves by Eva Cassidy; just haunting. Wow! What a voice.
ABC Nightline Eva Cassidy Special Edition: Part I, Part II, and Part III.
Anyways, have a great weekend.

Argh. Stanley Jordan. It’s funny how one performance can color your opinion of someone. My experience was the polar opposite of yours. I liked Jordan, but had never seen him live. I was going to get my first chance at the Saratoga Jazz festival in NY. This was going back a long ways - and when he was just becoming a phenom on the scene. He came out late - mumbled something about his fingers - played half a song - got up and said that we didn’t really expect him to play hurt - and walked off the stage.
Contrast this with Mile Davis, who always had a rep for dissing the audience. Miles came out and gave a full frontal performance that blew everyone away. He was both intense and playful.
I saw Davis every time I could - and never spent another nickel on Jordan.
Rodrigo y Gabriela will be playing next month at the Austin City Limits Festival. I never know when I have to be out of town, but I’m hoping to catch them here - as they haven’t played a heavy US tour schedule so far.

I used to think Diana Krall’s version of “Danny Boy” was the best I’d ever heard. Then I heard Eva Cassidy’s version. Cassidy adds the emotion, the soul, that’s missing from Krall’s version.
Same with “Fields of Gold”. I thought Sting’s version was okay until I heard Cassidy’s. She was amazing.
