Back from the Brink: Dirty Dozen Hands
It was a session that had me quickly down almost -$750, but I was able to claw back to a loss slightly under -$300.
Four-tabling on PokerStars has given me a bit of calm when these storms hit, and they hit very quickly last night. Here are a few hands which pounded me in the first thirty minutes followed by another nine hands throughout the session:

Hand 1 - Cooler
Hand 2 - I don’t like to get all in with top pair weak kicker, but would do it against some very aggressive opponents. I don’t think this is the case here.
Hand 3 - Unlucky. The jack on the river just rubs it in.
Hand 4 - Tough spot. Not sure if I would have played it differently - depends on the other player’s stats. You were getting the right odds
all the way. Case could be made for a shove, but I’m not sure if I would have.
Hand 5 - I would probably bet somewhere between half and 3/4 pot on the river unless you think this is one of those players that can’t fold even when he knows he is probably beat. Not many good players are calling your bet with a worse hand here.
Hand 6 - Would have done the same thing, but probably have re-raised bigger. You want to get all your money in there if he is on a draw and it is an extremely draw heavy board.
Hand 7 - Flop raise bigger - his lead out of the flop screams that he wants to see a cheap turn card; generally, at 1/2 the weak flop lead outs are draws and most of them will fold to a big re-raise. Turn re-raise big instead of flat call. I make a crying call on the river. He may have been on something like J10. It is tough for me to put him on a flush with the strange flop action - better two pair/set possible, but I think he raises bigger earlier with those.
Hand 8 - Nice play
Hand 9 - Bet on the river is fine. The pot is already pretty big and there is prob as much chance of him calling a smaller bet as that bet.
Hand 10 - I probably make a weakish looking small bet on the turn. The opponent might see it as weakness and try to come over the top thinking the ace was a scare card for your hand.
Hand 11 - Standard
Hand 12 - My turn action would depend on the player. If he is passive I’m betting. If he likes to float, I’m checking.
I did this pretty quick. I may have garbled a few. Overall looks like a nice session.

I thought that was me playing hand 1.
August 31st, 2007 at 7:26 pm
I like it better when you narrate the hands instead of posting a long list of hand histories.
September 1st, 2007 at 1:26 pm
In Hand 1, I feel like Ace-rag suited is a hand that should usually be raised or folded preflop. A reraise would have saved you your buyin.
September 3rd, 2007 at 9:50 am
You seriously need to watch some CardRunners videos. You shouldn’t be calling raises with weak hands in the small blind –out of position– in hands #1 and 2.
In Hand 2, you are way over-committing, with TP, weak kicker on the turn. All-in really isn’t the right move here.
In hand 4, moving in could be a good choice but you’re flush chasing with a $60 call.
In Hand 8, your cards are good enough on the button with one limper to raise preflop. A second bullet on the turn could be warranted here.
In Hand 9, I’m not sure why you are cold-calling a 3 bet preflop with KQ unsuited. And calling a 3/4 pot bet on the turn with a gutshot.
Hand 10, maybe a half-pot bet on the turn.
You have a very high variance, gambling style of play. Taylor Caby’s videos can help you make some sense of your game…
