The New Plan

Thanks to everyone who has emailed me or left comments regarding my big losing session.  I’ve come up with a new gameplan which hopefully will strengthen my poker pursuits in the coming months.

After my big drop, my online bankroll got down to $2.7k with another $3.8k or so in cash.  I’d had a nice month going, with my online bankroll up to $5.4k before the loss, and I’ve been able to bring it back to $3.86k today.  Since the WSOP, I’ve invested a good bit of time playing (49,336 hands, but who’s counting?), trying to make the transition from a solid LHE player to a competent NLH player.  Primarily, I’ve played 6-max, with 21k hands at $0.50/1 NLH 6-max.

My new plan is to start cashing out of Stars each month.  Since I won’t rely on these funds, it will be more of a positive reinforcement for me and Sweetie to receive checks monthly from my poker pursuits.  I’ve decided to withdraw any amount over $4,000 at the end of each month.  I’m not exactly sure how cashouts work (looking online now), so hopefully this will be a fairly painless process.  For any losing months, I’ll simply skip a cashout.  If I go on some big downswing, then I’ll have to readjust.

I also plan to stick to $0.50/1 NLHE 6-max until I get up $1k.  My results are fine for $1/2 NLH 6-max, but I’d prefer to simply stay at the lower level and grind it out until my results are back close to where they were.  I’m hoping this will be a successful experiment for the rest of the year.  As always, I’ll keep you posted.

A few rambling thoughts before the end of the weekend:

  • Padma Lakshmi  She’s rocketed to my #1 hottest fantasy lady, surging past long-time top spot holder Michelle Pfeiffer.  If you don’t know Padma, she was formerly married to Sir Salmon Rushdie and currently the host of Top Chef.  Padma wakes up the remaining five contestants (I started crying).  Then this last episode, she walks into the kitchen in this incredible dress.  I can’t find a video of her entrance into the kitchen, but she’s just incredible.
  • Top shows we have to watch for the upcoming season:  Bionic Woman (one of Sweetie’s favorite shows growing up), Kid Nation (good start, the kids like it), Survivor China (nice gut, Jean-Robert), The Office, Heroes.  Is that really it?
  • I’ve got some sort of Firefox problem.  I’m getting some long delay whenever I’m trying to do anything (using IE to do this for the first time), it hangs up then eventually I can do something (then hangs up while doing stuff).  I removed then reinstalled, but it still occurs (although I didn’t clear the cookies etc).
  • WSOP on ESPN:  I don’t particularly like watching it, and I think it’s time to refresh their approach.  It seems like it would be so easy to create 3x the episodes for the Main Event and show it on ESPN Classic as an example.  They don’t really show much poker at all in the early stages, so it is almost impossible to see any kind of story.  Even Dario Minieri’s roller coaster ride wasn’t really shown properly.  He made a huge bluff that was called by a baby flush/gutshot draw, and his king-high held up (they showed the end of the hand but didn’t really get into it).  This was after he’d melted down on the ESPN Feature Table.  He then clocked the Arizona lady (Deb Blair) who’d instacalled him with a better pair than him earlier, but they missed the story of that.  Just Googled it, and here is the post I made on PokerStars blog about it.  Fundamentally, it just isn’t a very good poker show.
  • Ed Hollis (compliments of Wes).  Going back, I picked it up when he lost 64k pounds (not sure where the pounds symbol is ) on 4 July.  I haven’t read everything since, but it looks like he has gone beyond busto into debtbusto.  I feel better already.

In case anyone is interested, here are a few hands from the big downswing session.  The $5/10 NLH hand was particularly sick as I was pwnd bigtime.

Just take it slow and steady, and then you’ll get it back. One good thing about those hand histories is that I didn’t see any minraises!

  2. Fuel55 says:

Someone cracked you with J8? I thought that was my job?

  3. pokerpeaker says:

Those are mostly awful coolers, a couple suckouts, one re-cock-ulus hand (J-8? I would not put him on that) and frustration setting in, making it hard for you to “listen” to what the bettors were telling you.

This is why you need a loss limit. It’s almost impossible after a while to make power folds when you’re feeling that way.

    Keep it up.

  4. Cameron says:

The Aj hand is horribly misplayed, your opponent played it perfectly and is likely to be a strong player. Why are you limping aj in the small blind blind v blind, doing anything other than raising is a huge mistake. The 77 open limp is also very bad and then check calling on that super drawy flop and checking the turn is just awful.
