Team Domeski Documentary
cmitch at Opoker had a link to an upcoming documentary by N 82 50 24 on four UGA online players, including Jeff “yellowsub” Williams.
The trailer definitely looks interesting. Although Jeff is on the gambool extreme of the Bell curve, he was a very nice guy when I interviewed him last year in Athens.
I’m sure hardly anyone follows women’s soccer, but the story of today’s 4-0 bashing of the top-ranked US team at the hands of Brazil is interesting on many, many fronts. A few tidbits:
- Coach switches goalkeepers Brianna Scurry has been a legend in goal throughout the history of the Women’s Team, but Hope Solo took her place a few years ago. With the US Women’s league defunct, Scurry has hardly played competitive soccer in the last four years. You can make your own analogies to hockey as an example, pulling the hot goalie in the Stanley Cup semis for the semi-retired veteran who hasn’t been between the pipes in four months. Solo didn’t help her cause after the match when she said she could have stopped every goal. Her team gets brutalized, and she decides to take the selfish low road. She also was dramatically incorrect, as the first goal (which put the US in a quick hole) was an own goal that Scurry had no chance at. Would Solo have yelled off the defender and taken the ball? Who knows.
- Suburbia soccer vs Brazilian poverty soccer The Beautiful Game has made its way to the female version in Rio, compliments of an incredibly electrifying player in Marta. You’ll have to catch the rerun or video on ESPN, but she makes this nifty side-foot flick around the defender (to the defender’s left) then circles around the other side, meets the ball, jukes like LT or Barry Sanders, then slots it home. The American girls looked at times like they were running in molasses compared to the Brazilians. It marks a changing of the women’s game.
- Everything went wrong We’ve all seen these kind of games in sports, where a snowball becomes a tidal wave and avalanche combined. 4-0 looks dreadful, but it went something like this: Own goal (1-0), Marta makes nifty move (2-0), Shannon Boxx gets second yellow card for running down the left side of the field then being run over/pushed from behind by a Brazilian (one of the worst calls ever in soccer, alot like Joey Harrington getting a personal foul rather D’Angelo Hall last weekend, with Harrington on the bench looking at plays). US comes back down a man in 2nd half with little hope, then coach makes bizarro substitutions (putting in defenders rather than offensive players), then even those substitutions go sour as Christiane scores (3-0) to end it then the female Ronaldhino Marta works magic (4-0).
I was going to write that my quest to take anything over $4k would amount to nothing this month, but I’ve come back from the brink to at least get into striking distance of $4k ($3,505). That after dipping below $3k then having a nice run-up playing $1/2 NLH 6-max. More to come later.
