Quest of a Closet Poker Player

If you didn’t know or haven’t kept up, Dr. Chako is in Iraq doing medical duty with our troops.  His wife has also started a blog to capture some of her experiences as he is so far away.  If you haven’t dropped by there, I encourage you to do so regularly.

I’ve never documented my thoughts on the war in Iraq, its origins, and what we should be doing.  I don’t think this is the forum for it, so I won’t go into that.  Having said that, I am untouched by this endeavor we are in.  It is too easy to forget that there are Dr. Chako’s and Wit’s and literally hundreds of thousands of men, women, and families who are sacrificing in so many ways.  Careers disrupted, marriages torn apart, net worths evaporating are some of the easy things.  Death, disability, mental scarring are the more significant challenges that fellow citizens are facing.

After putting The Little Guy to bed last night, I was walking down the hall when All-In came out of his room.  “Dad, can you come back and say prayers with me?” he asked.  I whipped around, and we went back into his room.  I got on my knees and listened to a nine year old speak to His Father about his Dad, and tears streamed down my face as I too spoke to the Lord on my knees.  It was a conversation that has been too rare for me lately.

I’ve suffered from something that Amy has been going through as well:  insomnia.  Most of my nights have been spent in the basement on the couch, and it is a problem that compounds itself.  I wish I could say that the problem has been too much late night poker, as the remedy would be easy.  It hasn’t been.  It is too much life stress, too much wondering about too much wandering.  I hope it ends soon.
