Two for the Ladies
It’s been quite a weekend for women in poker. J.J. Liu came thisclose to winning her second WPT title at the Bay 101 Shooting Stars event, where she finished second to Ted Forrest in the longest final table ever played on the World Poker Tour (263 hands, the average being in the low 100s).
J.J. took home $600,000 and set a new record for the highest finish by a woman at an open WPT event (she set the record herself in 2005 with her 4th place finish at the Bellagio Five-Diamond, Kathy Liebert broke it the following year at Borgata with her 3rd place finish, and now J.J. takes it back). This cash will also move her up to 4th place on the Women’s All-Time Money List, passing Mimi Tran and sitting behind only Liebert, Jennifer Harman, and Annie Duke. Adding to J.J.’s feat is the fact that she is four months pregnant, and according to my friend and PokerNews colleague Amy Calistri, Liu was in significant discomfort throughout the match and sought medical attention after the final hand was dealt. I hope everything is OK with J.J. and her baby.
Moving across the pond, fellow blonde of German descent and Team PokerStars member Katja Thater is currently at the final table of the EPT-Warsaw. Katja cashed twice at last year’s WSOP and has made numerous final tables across Europe. She went into play today as a short stack but has since doubled up and is still alive with five players remaining. Follow the action today with me over at PokerNews where our crack Euro team is covering the action live.
Happy St. Paddy’s Day to everyone, and be good, responsible drunks tonight! Salud!
