HollyDaze and Poker
Wow no poker for 5 whole days…I was in withdrawals! After returning home yesterday from the family Holiday thing, I caught up on some work then found a game on PokerStars. It was 10/20c Stud8 and had pots of $2 or more. Pretty good for a micro limit game I thought. The game was nutz of course, raising on great starters like J28 off suit. I didn’t have those great hands, so pitched my way through most of the action.
I did manage to get lucky a couple of hands. One I was against 888 with my A22, he made a FH and I made quad 2’s which I am sure sent him off the edge of his seat. IMO, what he failed to realize is in a wild jamming game, no one thinks twice or respects a raise, especially at these micro limits. So there is no way to protect a hand like rolled 8’s. NO one is folding.
The game was unusual, not just for the wild play (which I think of as normal) but for the amount of time quads showed up. I played for 2-3 hours, and saw quads FOUR times, three of those were in my hand. I made the before mentioned 2’s but also quad Q’s and fours. I can’t remember ever making quads 3 times in one game, let alone within a couple of hours.
At one time I was $2 ahead but managed to blow off $1.50 of it with starters like 345h 7h on fourth, and bricks the rest of the way. Sorry but I don’t play good enough to dump a 7 hi straight flush draw till I see the brick on the end!
It is a poker Murphys law thing, the more outs you have on a hand, the bigger you miss it. If there are 2 bricks left in the deck, I will catch them to those monster draws. I also fell into the donk catcher in front of me mode. He was another of the many “Will Rogers of poker hands” meaning he never saw a hand he didn’t like. He of course played every hand, and stopped my perfect card every single time I played.
While playing I recognize the phases my hands go through. Card dead of course is the norm, there are few good starter combinations when you really get down to it, but the miss*miss*miss* phase is what costs, chips and attitude. It is hard to keep a positive perspective when A234 bricks out to K82 off suit time after time, even in a micro game.
One thing that saves me money is my high “irritation level” which is easy to trigger. The last hand I played I had 6s6dAd hit a 6 on fourth and a Ace on fifth. I lost to a Q87 off suit, he made 8’s full of Q’s and withstood all my pressure of course, in a 3 way pot. I want to ask so bad, “what were you hoping to make with that chit”?? But of course I don’t. I just let my irritation flow and slam the Leave Table button and escape to reruns of reruns of Law and Order or NYPD Blue.
I hope to be able to jump in a tourney soon, all this blogging about poker, makes me want to play! But of course it is snowing. Why does the Snow Fairy have to be related to the Card Fairy? They know I have the urge to play and conspire against me! No internet=no poker *grrr*
When Saturday rolls around maybe I can use one of my tickets finally and score in a weekly round 2, which I have managed to miss for weeks now. But until the snow melts off my satellite dish I am sidelined for poker at least. Not to worry, I have plenty to do, like unpack so I can repack to head back to Reno the 1st. Looks like Hubby will have chemo every week which means every 6 days we head for “The Biggest Little City in the World” for 1 night. We will find out more about his schedule when we talk to his Doc on the 2nd.
In the “Never say Never” department: I never thought I would see the day when I dreaded going to Reno! Maybe if I had time to play poker it would be different.
