Tourney Sleepers

I have complained about them before. The players who sign up for a tourney and never play, the irritating “sleepers” found in all Freerolls.

Unfortunately Friday night the sleeper donk was me! I had no control over it of course. It has been snowing like the angels are having the worlds biggest pillow fight, and all the pillows are busted open, raining stuffing down on us.  A few more inches every day, day in and day out.  Don’t get me wrong, I DO love the snow, I just HATE it messing with the satellite dish and my internet being out!

Things in cyber land seemed to be going ok, so I sweated Linda in a tourney for awhile then signed up for a $1 Razz tourney.  Since I am a Stud8 maven, I don’t even consider starters like 10-9-3 so I pitch a lot. I danced a few dances and ran my stack down to $500 then got on a little roll and ran it up to almost $4,000.  Then it happened…all the little green lights on the satellite moden going off. I hate the dreaded black little PC icon on my task bar that has the big red X on it. That tells me I am cyber dead.

There were around 300 entrants for the Razz tourney and I only played maybe a total of 45 minutes. Amazing I came in 56 I think it was, by not playing! No money of course, but if the weather had co-operated, I think I could have made the money.

I like Razz ok, but hadn’t played it in years. Like the stud8 I don’t think many players grasp the concept. This is evident when you see a 9 raising and a K and Q calling. Geeze, I have enough trouble making a hand without starting with a handicap.

My weather problem has me thinking live games are my best bet, at least if the dish donks out, I will time out and not lose any more $$. If I play a tourney, I have to consider the fact I may be a sleeper and sacrifice my buy-in.  Playing online for me poses a different type of risk than it does for the other gals. I could lose much of my BR just with tourney buy-ins…if I lost my connection and wasn’t able to complete the tourney.  This tells me I shouldn’t invest more than $2 in a tourney, at least until spring!Glinda1.jpg

Another tournament dilemma I have is the weekly round 2’s on PokerStars. I have 2 tickets for them. I looked up the one for yesterday, and the time was 10 a.m. EST! Cripes! That is 7 a.m. here! The only time I am up at that ungodly hour is if I haven’t been to bed yet! I am not now or have ever been a morning person. I can’t blame it on years of pitching tickets on the graveyard shift either. Mom used to tell me even when I was a baby I was up all night and slept all day. I was born noctornal!

I have no idea if or when those “tickets” expire, but I will keep checking the schedule for Saturdays, just maybe I will get lucky and all the weekly round 2’s don’t start when the roosters wake up.

It looks like our other 2 team members are on vacation (lucky them)  so the playing/blogging falls on me & our fearless leader Linda for now.  It all works out though, since I am gone 2-3 days a week myself.

All this poker talk makes me want to play, and since there is no heavenly pillow fight going on right now, I think I will head over to PokerStars and see what I can get myself into!

I played a stud one a while back and there were only two of us ‘live’ at the table. This seems a recent manifestation. When I started out online I played a lot of them and sleepers were very rare.

Interesting that UB has a feature that allows them to dump the dead seats at the pause they have. It was put in to accommodate Cardplayer’s freerolls which I used to play semi-regular. The competition in them was a lot more solid and pretty intense. You had to have points from posting in their forum or buying stuff from them. Won one as a matter of fact. It had 1500 in prizes. I probably played close to half of them. They went belly up with the UIGEA.

Dead seats truly change the dynamics of play for the full first hour. It really is a shame they don’t use the tools they have. Seems silly to fear offending a freeroll player who doesn’t have the courtesy to show.
