No Next Step After Sunday’s Tourney

The Weekly Freeroll Slot on UB that I Won the invite to for Sunday the 20th was a bust for me.Lady Luck was nowhere to be found.  I saw more unsuited 2,7-3,8-2,-9 and 4,8 hands than I have ever seen before.  The ONLY 4 possible to play hands that I received were as follows.  Since there were no real flush possibilities on these hands, not all card suit details are given here.

The first hand was a K,10 unsuited with $30-$60 blinds.  I was in position one and most players folded except for the player left of BB and position two.  I called and SB and BB folded also.  The flop was 2,k,10.  Player left of BB checked and Position two Bet $120.  I called.  The other player folded.  The turn was a 9.  Position two bet $200 and I called.  The river was a Q.  Position two bet $400 and I called.  I won with my two pair over his A,K unsuited.   Maybe I should have done some raising but was feeling rather cautious as this was my first playable hand and barely at that!

My second hand was a Q,10 if you can call that a hand.  Blinds at this point were $50-$100 and I was BB and was able to check.  The Flop was 3,3,9.  Everyone checked so I was able to stay in with a check of my own.  The turn was a K and position 3 bet $300.  I folded on that.   He won with a pair of Kings as he was holding K,J.  He had one taker on the bet and the river was a Jack.  Position 3 bet $600 and the other player called and his hand was mucked.

Then I caught a PAIR of Jacks after sitting until the point of drowsiness.  I was SB and Blinds were $100-$200.  Everyone was in.  The flop was 5,10,9 and I bet $200.  I had two players who called.  BB and position 4.  The turn was was 8.  I bet $400 and both players stayed in with me.  The river was an Ace and I bet $800.  Position 4 called and turned up and A,7 to win.

My last hand was literally my last hand of the tourney and I caught a pair of Queens.  I was down to 930 chips.  I was the dealer and several players had called.  At this point, it was $300 to play, I think.  I simply went all-in.  Everyone folded except for  position 7 who called.  The flop was 5c,8c,9h.  No need for betting so the turn came as a 7s.  Then the river was a 4d.  My opponent had a Kh,6h.  What luck on his part to catch that straight and end my game!

Better luck next time, I guess. $Maxiecat$

i think the mistake made was on the JJ hand. You had a great flop/turn and failed to get all in. Maybe you’d have been called and sucked out on. Instead you let someone buy a somewhat cheap card. With that many in and the big blind at 200, it was time to take down the pot while you were likely ahead. Betting 400 never defined your hand and invited calls.

I’d normally say it is best to play small pot poker but that is a luxury that you can’t afford on a shrinking stack. When you lost that hand, you made the call possible on your all in where you had a 3x bet and nothing behind. The way you finally lost was brutal but getting the call by such a hand isn’t unusual. That’s why you need to win pots like the JJ hand. Too often we’ll get called by slow played better hands or the occasional made set with ratty pairs that hit their 7:1 or so. People will call that a donk move but is it? I’d call it bad timing and that isn’t readable.

I seem to play too conservatively. Habit of life, I guess. I need to go for it when the getting seems good and will have to work on it. tks.
