Cowboys Thrown In The Dirt
Finally got another chance to play this week and got into the 7:40 p.m. Freeroll on Full Tilt. Had to sit for a bit until the All-In patrol calmed down and started playing hands. As luck would have it, I wasn’t getting any hands to play - until I caught a pair of cowboys as BB. No, I did not go All-in, at least not at first. Blinds were $25-50. Only one player folded and everyone else checked except for the SB. SB bet $250 and I raised to $500. Three other players called and SB raised me so I raised him. Around we went again with everyone calling and SB raised me as well as himself to All-In (I had about $1800 in chips). In fact, everyone involved was All-in. Up popped a 3,5c a Qd,10h, a J,9s and SB showed a pair of Aces. The flop came as 3d, Ks and Ac. Lucky Me! The turn was a Qh and the River was a 10d. NO help! Bye-Bye Maxiecat! Oh well, better luck next time?? $Maxiecat$

IMO the only 2 hands that should have been in that pot were you and the AA. But that is common in the Freerolls, players see a big pot and want in it, no matter what they have. Don’t get discouraged, at least the agony didn’t last for hours! You are getting better and better each time you play!

Max, don’t let that bother you one bit. While the idea is to play great hands and work position, you don’t have to just turn into a stump though. Read Aaron’s coverage on shallow tournaments. It works well against freerolls too.

The idea is to last, yes. But, not without a decent stack. You are looking at 3-4 hours before you get the bubble going. And because the payouts go much higher only late, a bit of gamble isn’t out of order. And if somebody tells you otherwise when you suck out on them at times, show them the middle digit. Me included. Once you have the basic game down — and it looks like you’re at least close — experiment a bit and see what position can do for you.

What a great article! I learned a lot about myself and my play in the few minutes it took to read it. Thanks much!
