Playing With My New Hand Playing Guide
I took the time to do some research on proper hand play for HE and then created a spreadsheet of hands based on different types of play from Tight to down right Betting Your Head. Then I managed to get into a tourney for a WSOP Round 1 with 4316 players and started to test my new playing guide.
The very first hand I got was a K,3 of clubs and I was only two past BB. According to the “rules” for play I was only supposed to call on the hand from a late position with lots of callers and only to raise an unraised pot on the Button. Therefore, I folded the hand. The Flop came as 6,8 of clubs and a 9 of diamonds. The rest of the “rules” for the hand included continuing to play only if you gained a Flush draw, trips or two pair.
Well, the Flush draw was there and the Turn was a 7 of clubs. Only an Ace high flush could beat me at this point (as far a Flushes go) and 3 players went all in at this point. The River came as a K of Spades. Player one had a 9 high Straight. Player two had a 10 high straight. But, player three had a J,10 giving him a Jack high Straight and he took the pot. He increased his 1500 chip starting stack by 3000. I would have increased mine by 4500! I tried hard to remind myself that for every pot you play that you should not and win, that there are many more you will lose in the long run, but it was hard losing out on that kind of a starting stack!
I continued to play by the “rules” and managed to stay in for a bit but finally lost out to the very fast play with quickly increasing blinds and antes having no hands to the point that I had only 400 chips left and was forced All-In as big blind with a K,J that never got any help. I did, however, make it to number 361 of the 4316 players for an 8.3% finish. Therefore, all in all, the system guide was not too bad. I will have to play more tourneys to see just how effective it really is. $Maxiecat$

K3s is an interesting and equally dangerous hand. It plays for those that have a good post flop game. Don’t overuse that table. Try to take away what it is trying to say in fluid view. Outs are the main concept that you should be getting down or may have down at this point. Combine that with the attempt — often impossible in freerolls — to play more small pot poker. Controlling the size of the betting is also a next level technique to try to establish.

Points well taken and equally frustrating in freeroll mania!

I’ve found that free rolls are not really poker games til one half to two thirds of the players are gone. Until that time it is just another form of craps.
