Hi-Lo Rolling…
The Stud H/L games have been dead lately. I haven’t seen any in 3 days I thought was worth getting in. That means I have been in a couple tournaments with no success. And I hate HE so that is no option unless I am really in the mood for it which I never am.
Today I played the Sunday $100k event on PokerStars. Had JJ- no good, 88 no good and called with a few various hands like J-10 suited and unsuited, flopped a flush/straight draw once and called till the end to make nothing. I had 5-5 on the button, raised 3x the blinds and got the BB caller. Flop was 8-6-7 rainbow, turn a 2 river an A so the BB’s AQ won and yes I kept betting and he kept calling till the bitter Ace end. They know it is coming and if it gets there it will win, so of course they should call. Have I mentioned I HATE Hold’em?
I went all in with K-J off and ran into AQ again, but at least the A popped on the flop so I knew I was toast right away…..and I was out.
Not having enough of being smacked in the head by the bad card run, I signed up for the $10 Stud H/L tourney. Those $1 buy-in ones just kill me, play for 4 hrs to make $1 or $2 just sucks. I could make way more picking up soda cans along side the road. But, we don’t have a challenge for that..yet anyway. And if we did, Maxie would cream us, me anyway as there is too much competition in my county. Not to mention it would cost me more in gas than I would ever profit!
Back to the Stud tourney. Observations: K-2-4 off, 10-8-4 off and any 2 below an 8 with a brick is a hand to call a raise with or to put in a double raise with. Bluffing is not at all possible; someone does and WILL chase you down with anything, especially a 1 way low draw heads up. The quality of starting hands and level of play in a $10 buy-in and a $1 buy-in tourney are NO different. Â If the idiot player in front of you is playing garbage and catching your cards-raising will not get him out- He will continue to draw to nothing, trying to make something. Raising with A-2-4 suited guarantees bricks, while the 10-3-7 off suit will make a straight 7 every time-and can’t wait to call your raises and bets all the way.
The only thing so far I have found that really helps my game is…rum and lots of it! The only $100k event I placed in was while drinking. I either need to drink more or only play when I drink I guess. One thing for sure-drinking sure helps calm the irritation of being a brick magnet!
Back to the tournament…and the bar…..If I don’t add to this later, well then I didn’t place, but I am hoping as there are only 12 to go till the $$…

You can always tell the drink of choice for young ladies from the Tiki Bar era…
Hope you drank it in a mug shaped for a Puka God or whatever those ugly things were.
(Confession: I actually used to like drinking at Trader Vic’s in the Palmer House in Chicago back then. Mai Tai, anyone? They started serving me when I was 17! Nice people!)

Actually my favorite besides the very expensive Dom bubbly, is a good long island ice tea…but a good Mai Tai is fine too!
