Teach me razz or send me some towels
It’s almost noon and I’m rushing to vacate my room because it is supposed to receive its weekly cleaning. I have, however, discovered the dirty secret of the Smoke & Disinfectant Inn. They have some scheme I have as yet not unraveled for profiting by promising to clean the rooms and failing to follow through.
Maybe they have an extra cleaning charge on the bill that amounts to their total profit. Maybe they have someone taking action on the number of phone calls guests will make before giving up trying to get fresh towels. I don’t know. But I do smell something foul, though it could be the mouldering pile of towels in the corner of the kitchen.
Razz doesn’t start until 2 PM and I received a great lesson late last night from Ted Forrest and Huck Seed. (The best bit of advice: don’t play razz with Ted Forrest and Huck Seed. I will try to describe the gathering later; it was very fun and a great pleasure finally meeting Huck.) I wanted to spend some time listening to and maybe transcribing the audio of the meeting, but didn’t want to jinx my cleaning by being in the room.
I was getting ready to pack up to head to the Rio when I decided to call the front desk to confirm that the maid was, indeed, coming. The woman at the front desk said today’s cleaning was news to her, nor was there anything suggesting my room was supposed to be cleaned last Wednesday. (Wednesday being the make-up date because they failed, as promised, to clean it last Tuesday or the previously-scheduled day, last Monday.)
“I promise we’ll have someone clean it tomorrow, Sunday.”
And I believe her because I’m a trusting person. An optimist. Which makes me probably the last person in the world who should be playing razz.
That’s why I better get back to those audio files. I’ll let you know how it goes afterward. Hopefully CardPlayer.com will feature me (positively) in updates. I’ll try to write about the adventures of Huck ‘n’ Ted later on. It was great fun.
