Free Richard Lee!

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

News reports out of San Antonio say that, after keeping him under surveillance for several months, San Antonio police executed a search warrant on the home of Richard Lee, the sixth place finisher at the World Series of Poker just three weeks ago.

Apparently, Lee was involved in … gasp … gambling.

The shame of it.

Freedom to Be[t], You and Me

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Richard Brodie - why, yes, he is the Quiet Lion - has railbirded me the last two nights, giving me a bit of cred with the other players in the late night Full Tilt tournaments. I thought it was because we had become such good friends during the World Series this year, and I’m sure it is. But I also realized - after he TOLD me - that he was haunting the rail because he would be committing a felony if he plays an online poker tournament. A lot of people should be jailed for their online poker play. But not Richard Brodie!

Take Your Best Shot

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

I’m not giving much notice here, but I’m playing in Full Tilt’s $24+2 MTT at 10 PM MST. That’s 2 minutes from now. I’ll also play the $50+5 at 11 PM MST. And any $50-and-above HORSE SnGs I see for the next couple hours.

The Pope of Full Tilt

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

As I write this, I’m playing the 11 PM $50 + $5 tournament on Full Tilt Poker. In fact, as I’m writing the FULL TILT book, I’m often playing while I write. Sometimes, it’s for research. Sometimes, A.D.D. Mostly, it’s just because I’m a card player and, if I have to spend 12-16 hours a day in front of my computer, I should be playing cards while I do it.

Waking Mike Matusow

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

I just returned from 24 hours in Vegas, most of which was spent in the company of Mike Matusow. It was a nice time, very productive (I got part of an interview on Omaha Hi-Lo, Mike made $70,000). But I feel like I aged about five years.

The problem with razz …

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

The problem with razz is that I have to write the razz chapter from an interview with Ted Forrest and Huck Seed and it’s 2 AM. I’ve been transcribing the 4 audio files since 10 AM and I just finished. And I never got to Vegas to interview Mike Matusow for the Omaha Hi-Lo chapter, though it wasn’t for lack of trying.

Back on the Road

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

I truly wish I could stay home longer but with a deadline 10 days away and almost no information on post-flop no-limit hold ‘em, Omaha hi-lo, or seven card stud, I need to return to Las Vegas for some interviews. Or at least one interview.

Inside My Bedroom, and other writing challenges

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

It’s 11:15 PM and I’m back to work. I haven’t finished the Shannon Elizabeth post but I have an assignment that’s much more important. It came from my wife Jo Anne.

Potluck with Shannon Elizabeth

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

I spent a day going through my notes of the evening of August 6. The Main Event played down from 27 players to 9. Unnoticed except for those who participated, 481 players anted up $1,500 apiece to take a second-to-last shot at a World Series bracelet. Shannon Elizabeth Fadal was among them and she proved to be a very worthwhile diversion from watching the same thing everyone else was watching that evening.
