Muzak-ly Inclined

I had to add just a tiny bit to my music-themed posts of the last month:

1. Robin Leach posted my column in the September 21 episode of LUXE LIFE.

I think I have a real future covering rock concerts; I really do.

2. I meant to put this in the GnR stuff someplace but I never did: I think this tour could do for Axl Rose what the Comeback Special did for Elvis. You remember seeing versions or pictures from that Elvis show? He was wearing the black leather suit, clearly an adult versus the kid who originally became famous but still compelling to watch. The problem, though, ultimately, is that Elvis wasn’t ABOUT anything when he came back. He was only about letting people see him again.

Is Axl Rose going to be content with that? I know he’s spent more than ten years on Chinese Democracy but the audience I was in couldn’t have cared less about the few songs the group did from that “album” and the set-up of the show - pacing, acoustics, etc. were such that even if the audience did care, it would have been impossible to judge the quality of the music.

The concert wasn’t even about music. It was about noise. It was great getting to hear the legendary hits and see them performed with such gusto but I can’t honestly tell you if Axl even knows the words to all those songs. Guns ‘n’ Roses shredded our noise tolerance. It was intentional and it was successful. But it sure wasn’t a proving ground for the Material Off the New Album.

3. Jay Greenspan, my poker-writer buddy and defender of the Pina Colada Song, is getting married in a couple days. Congrats to him and may he never get tired of his old lady/lovely lady.

His upcoming nuptuals reminded me that I never shared the dumbest lyric from the song. (I devoted part of a post a couple weeks ago to explaining why it was one of the dumbest songs ever recorded.

The personal ad that attracts him says, among other things, “If you’re not into yoga ….”

The narrator’s responding ad, which tracks the original ad line-for-line, answers, “I’m not much into health food.”

I wonder if Rupert Holmes knew that yoga was not a form of health food, or whether his intention was to make the narrator a moron.
