I should preface this by saying Chris Ferguson is one of my best friends in poker, and one of my favorite people. He is an admirable person on many levels. But ….

I am less than two weeks from my deadline with Warner Booiks for THE FULL TILT POKER STRATEGY GUIDE: TOURNAMENT EDITION. I’ve already gotten one extension and my original editor, with whom I had a two year working relationship, just left the company. They made me sign another contract saying this would be the final extension and turning in the manuscript on October 9 was a material term of our agreement.

Gulp.

So I’m meeting with Chris yesterday, racing through a lot of material, and I mention the deadline. He quietly said, “Yeah, we have to do something about that deadline and getting it moved.”

I knew this was coming. It took Ferguson 13 years to finish his dissertation and even then, he finished it only because they threatened to kick him out of the program at UCLA if he didn’t finish it. Referring to why his house-hunting among the luxury condominium complexes on the Las Vegas Strip early this year hadn’t resulted in a sale, he said, “It took me 6 months to buy a $30,000 car. How long do you think it’s going to take me to buy a million-dollar house?”

So I’m listening, thinking about it.

P.S. - Chris Ferguson has Bart Simpson - the actual voice of the character, Nancy Cartwright - delivering his voicemail message. My first thought was, how cool is that? My second was, should I get Chris to record a message for MY voicemail?
