Another Season of Friends

There are online friend. Such friendships are fragile. I haven’t met a single one of the people in person that I call friends. Some don’t even know I consider them such. The government wants to stop those and has tried in some pretty shabby ways that leave us with a truly bad taste in our mouth. These online friends play poker.

Those pontificating from Washington uses every cheap trick in the book. Roll out the idiot kid and his ‘loving, preacher father” where the idiot robs a bank after getting a lift there in a fraternity brother’s wheels. Parade such a fool into the spotlight as the prima facie example of evil. Talk about the addictive gamblers; even though there aren’t any more of those today than there were back when the Internet was only a gleam in Al Gore’s eye.

Well, Gene is doing an expose of that abuse over on the Poker Professor’s site. No need for me to try to best that. It is part 1 of 3 that he’s done and it is running well.

I want to mention a friend of all of ours here. That is Carmen. She just did a great piece of writing about herself and poker. She isn’t going to get free press from some congressman over it. She didn’t sugar coat anything. She had an additive personality and has fought that and continues to do so. But poker isn’t her addiction – unless you want to parse it in a good way. She describes it as her salvation. It has redirected her energies.

I won’t detail what it all was about. She tells her story better than I or a politician could come up with on our best effort. So, head over to my online friends site and understand that everything becomes what you let it be — for better or worse.

But the good doesn’t end with a single player’s experience. A very similar blog is from HighOnPoker who titles it “What Poker Taught Me About Life” where he details the ups and down of life are made more understandable from his poker play.

If I want someone with some good advice for my problems in poker and life, I’ll go looking to Carmen and Jordan for some advice. Frist, Goodlatte, and Leach? Frankly, I wouldn’t want to get life advise from them on what to order at a fast food joint and they’d probably pass legislation to make me draw to an inside straight, if I brought up poker in their august presence.

The American doctor, not to be outdone, interjected, “You guys are way behind. We are about to take a woman with no brains, send her to Washington where she will become President, and then half the country will be out looking for work immediately.”
