Fresh

I know it is supposed to mean something different to those with cred. Or is that KRE@| or something? I just read a nice little article here by smokkee that talks a bit about it. He obviously has more cred because he’s not only smokkee but $mokkee. But, I figured a lamer like me could provide balance of a sort.

His title is When to Call it Quits and it has good advise. I doubt it breaks new ground but then when was the last time you saw me do that? The statement and idea are a constant theme as we vacillate between genius and lower primate. It’d be nice if there was a poker GPS we could connect our trip navigator. But, poker travel is all back roads.

Persistence is a virtue. All virtues can become vices. It was that for me at Ultimate Bet early on. They tracked hours played and I was playing over 200 hours a month. That was a full time job with overtime. Did I remain fresh? I think I did. I used to pull all nighters programming and when I saw the sun come up wonder where the night had gone. My interest had trumped my body.

Today, I don’t have those juices flowing. Fresh means a lot. I do it with moderate length sessions. I do it varying sites. I do it with table moves. It is a reboot of my attention. There is a psychological aspect too in having fewer memorable losing sessions. Even if I am on a downer, it isn’t as apparent. I am working with multiple bankrolls and that modest bit of confusion allows me to at least rationalize that things aren’t as bad as they might really be.

If you run back in my blogs, you’ll see a horrid run on FullTilt. I’ve been avoiding it and playing PokerStars and Bodog. It has been a good month on both. Tilt carries baggage of the variance that I’m still trying to overcome. I almost feel like running to RGP and shouting about action shuffles. That’s stupid but it lurks in the back of my mind and why play with that negative baggage.

BTW, if anybody knows of a smaller site that has a few stud tables active, please leave a comment. I’m kinda looking for a site to add.

Fresh is important. Maybe I see it more as the bod argues with me more. But, I think it is a value that can slip through the cracks and contribute to the problem smokkee details. When we tend to fixate on a problem we can ignore the real one. Jumping around gives us fresh perspectives and fresh adrenalin.

There is a negative. You aren’t prospecting like some do. I like to at least think I can at least be competitive at both loose and tight tables. I can be comfortable or uncomfortable at either. But, that fits right into the idea of varying play using movement as a tool. I’m going against the site change idea a bit by playing mostly on PokerStars. But, I’m varying that by playing between 2-4 and .25-.50 with the criteria being the availability of a seat. That works for a casual player like myself. I don’t grind or multi. If I did/could multi, it’d be part of this idea.

ADDENDUM:

I GOT STOPPED FOR SPEEDING THE OTHER DAY. I THOUGHT I COULD TALK MY WAY OUT OF IT UNTIL THE COP LOOKED AT MY DOG IN THE BACK SEAT.
