Hello, Pauly

This is Ken, Pauly.

It’s so nice to have you back where you belong.

I just read Pauly’s latest. With a couple of minor changes, it could be in the New Yorker, or a New York Times feature or the other side of the news print spectrum with The Wall Street Journal. I’d have mentioned that in a comment on his blog but I’m banned there. His first year, I left a comment that his working blue wasn’t necessary. He was showing signs of quality and that staying with that idea could hold him back.

My thought was that he was too fixated on being a Gonzo journalist. (He used the term to excess.) He had a chance to be a Newhart grade writer and go beyond only being cast as a lounge act – to use a comedic reference. That got me banned.

He said in an earlier blog that he is back at this WSOP as the old Pauly. Sorry, Pauly but you are wrong. You’ve gotten better as this piece proves. In the interim, you’ve worked for PokerNews and it wasn’t your thing. But, you wrote to journalism standards that didn’t include the term Gonzo. The change was for the better.

You also have the chance to add thought without the 10-minute chip count updates. The old stuff was a stream of consciousness gig that was good; but, it didn’t showcase whatever skills you possess. The more laid back approach does.

You might actually make it, kid. You’ve grown.

ADDENDUM:

Here’s a quote from Doyle’s latest:

I was driving my scooter back to my car when a lady came screaming up to me and literally knocked me out of the scooter onto the floor. She was from Idaho and said she watches every poker show and I was her favorite player.

I didn’t know Linda’s relatives were in town for the WSOP.

As long as I’m on quality, Doyle probably has the best poker blog going from a pro.  (Although Kenna is about the same level.  If you say Daniel, I can live with that view.)  It is about him and his interests beside just poker without being an advertisement. Fortunately, I’m not banned from Pauly’s site yet, so I can root him on. His description of Eskimo Clark watching replays of Jerry Yang’s victory is absolutely must reading this morning. I agree that his writing is getting deeper and richer, and this year’s output thus far is magic. Hope he has the stamina for this journey, and hope he takes some time off if he’s burning out.
