This N That

I’ll start off with poker and end up who knows where. But, heck, isn’t that typical?

 First, congratulations to Mike the Mouth! He got a nice year going with his weight loss getting him a nice payday from Ted Forest. Then he took down the Duce-Seven Draw last night against about as impressive a final table as you’ll get these days. Whatever meds he’s taking are looking like they are working. He screwed up on one hand – playing a flush he missed – and was able to regroup nicely.

 I haven’t watched or played the single draw game. The idea is similar to RAZZ in getting the lowest hand but it has more gotchas. You might call it a thinking man’s RAZZ but it is way different beyond being a draw game. The other big hands play – straights and flushes – at the high side as does the ace. The nuts are 75432 rainbow. With this playing as the single draw version, there are a lot of winners that are a long way from the nuts. The game seems as much about reads as cards. You are going to look foolish at times and — next up — you can take it down with an even worse hand.

 I always read Iggy who’s moved to political analysis. We all tend to get there this political gaming season. The two of us sit on opposite ends of the table but thats fine by me. I always seem to get more from seeing the views from the other side. PBS and NPR make me think. Sometimes it with my side’s views but usually it drifts in the other direction. I have no problem with that. It far more enjoyable and evocative than Foxish fare. But, Fox deserves some respect – for first amendment reasons should you find no other.

 I get the bulk of my info from the net so when Iggy linked to some person I don’t know and he admitted to Paulyesque action reloading, I went and read his link. Not my cuppa, that lady. Too polished and avant garde for my Midwestern sensibilities. She proceeded to trash everyone but her beloved Obama. Hillary got that more than even McCain. And she managed it on a personal basis more than an intellectual one. Iggy, what’s the allure? Go hit the tables to get your nuts busted.

Our beloved postal system gives us a reason not to get to heated up over the allure of alternate fuels. At least this time their activity aren’t gun toting postal in the other sense.

Back on the poker beat, Poker Tracker’s latest beta finally fixed PokerStar’s HH reading. Now if they’d just do a total rewrite. The software blows!

 Anyway, it does track things I wouldn’t normally see. Yesterday, I went over $500 in rake for the year. That’s a record I’d as soon were swept under the rug. I’m not a higher stakes player and the idea that they’re up $200 over my results aren’t gratifying. Even those playing bigger mid-level tables are going to have a hard time being more profitable than the house. Its only the higher stakes that negate the impact of the rake to a reasonable degree. Let’s face it. Most of us are either grinders or recreational.

 ADDENDUM:

This little piggy went WII, Wii, wee – all the way home. One of the nice guys in poker is hawking his kids game console. Lots of goody and I gather a decent price. So, if you are thinking about buying one, take a look here first.
