Want to mention a couple of neat but nerdy items today. Then, a bit of poker stuff.

First off…

Today, is the release date for Firefox 3. I’ve been using the release candidate and it really is a major improvement. Download it and give it a try. If you are downloading it on the 17^th, it make take some retries to even get the site. They are trying for a Guinness record for downloading in a 24 hour period.

Second bit of nerdiness:

I just picked up a VOIP item called MagicJack which is a little box about the size of a business card. It plugs into your USB port and then you plug a regular phone into the other end. It registers itself and for 20-bucks a year you get unlimited calling in the US and Canada. You may think Skype but this is a ‘real’ phone that takes incoming calls too. It is also a nice item for the road warrior. In the motel or a hot spot, you can call without using cell minutes. As soon as I’m done with the blog I’m running out to pick up a cheap/small phone I can pack for trips along with home use.

Now, on to poker…

I guess it is timely to chat about chat. By that I’m referring to the chat window at your favorite site. Yes, a situation can exist where we are ‘misunderstood’ and ranted at. Well, I always thought being misunderstood was the sincerest form of flattery you could get at the tables. Kicks being predictable in the backside.

The rants are going to happen. Let’s face it. There are times we are holding ourselves back from such activity. The river is a nasty beast. That holds true for every flavor of poker out there. Sadly, our opponents are seldom drawing dead and, yes, I’ve even drawn out on the other guy at times.

If you defend yourself in such attacks, you might want to avoid needing to relive yourself as your ship sales into the wind. That’s a saying as old as poker. When someone is venting, you let them vent. They aren’t in the mood for rational discussion. Joining that discussion is like playing AJT in hopes of a straight. Let your opponent try for the double gutshot and smile if he makes it.

I do occasionally type something in after a bad one. It is usually WP or WPOM or NH. And, I get some relief when I occasionally get at TY back. I find such inane remarks as comforting as #%^#!

ADDENDUM:

I just saw an article saying that a study comes up with 15-billion as the amount of online gambling. It didn’t say how much of that was poker but I’ll assume it is the majority. That is a lot of money going through the rake. But, is it representative of how we gamble? I’ve gambled literally thousands since the first of the year. I started with $40 on PokerStars – I think. I’m still playing on that money. It has grown. I have and haven’t gambled thousands.
