Who was the last one you…
had kinky … voted for? I don’t mean just pulling the lever or popping out chad. I mean felt comfortable with your choice. I’m think about that this morning after a night of fireworks.
For me, I guess I’d have to say Regan. Although, I wasn’t uncomfortable with Geo I. Politics are a sine wave in voting. We tend to react to the swings beyond our good senses. I’d thought Johnson was just peachy until it all fell apart and drove me in to Ronny’s waiting arms. I did vote the second time for Geo I. But, he’d done himself in with that ‘Read my lips…” crapola.
If you look at those sine waves of excess from both sides, you see the guy on the pendulum swing doesn’t have to run all that hard. OK, Geo II wasn’t a walk in the park but he actually ran against both parties in some respects.
It is all kind of like our view of the economy at the moment. We are concerned. But, we’re also looking for short term fixes when it is the long term matters – unless you’re my generation. But, even there we probably think about it more than most. We sit here watching the younger generations making the same mistakes we did and can’t hide our remembered mistakes in youthful exuberance.
In this election, I’ll be folding my hand and voting for a third party candidate. I’d did that with both Bush runs and I did it with Clinton. It is a cop out but also the only choice I can make with any comfort. Obama looks good in parts but scary in others. His momentum reminds me of Geo’s first run. The knock on Geo was experience and that really proved the opponents right. McCain seems neither fish nor fowl. His club includes both side and that reflects in a hodge-podge of views that address symptoms more than solutions.
I thought poker players would be better at decisions on politics but they are all over the ball park and all in on the preflop. We really should be better at all this than we are. We sit at a table and know that people are trying to sell us a bill of goods and are critical. Then we look at the real world and look past the crooked dealers at accept it because it is the only game open.
But, keep the faith somehow. We’ve supposedly been done in before by a host of boogie men and have always risen to the challenge and won from behind. But, one of these time that 9th inning dinger won’t show up when we expect it. Don’t be too complacent when it is your turn at bat. Lets hope the free world too is approaching the all star break.
ADDENDUM:
Pokerwise, I’m in a downturn. I just can’t get traction. If you recall, I had a couple of heaters and now I’m locked in a trading range like a worn down stock. I just can’t sustain any upward momentum for long enough to make a run. It has happened before. I’m not as frustrated with it as I might have been in the past but you can’t avoid frustration completely.

I finally figured out what is missing in this year’s WSOP coverage. It is the “Expo” that rides its coattails. Of course, in past years, folks were channeled through that area with last year doing away with the side roads. If it is as dead as the very few pics I’ve seen of the area, look for Harrahs/Caesars to put up the cones and run everyone through their expo cash cow.
