Some mostly good poker…

Maybe it was a little inspiration from Lakisha Jones on American Idol, or maybe it was the chapters of Harrington on Holdem III I’ve been studying, or maybe the poker gods just decided to shine a pen light my way…

Yup. I won a Mookie!

Now, if I could just get my live tourney game up to the level of my online game… sigh.

Luck was on my side, no doubt about it – however, I’d like to say it was just the amount of luck needed to win a tourney of any kind. I changed up my game a bit, paid closer attention to pot odds than usual. That allowed me to press a couple of draws (which is something I consistently shy away from) and they paid off for me.

Tourney anecdote – I was sitting on pocket tens when my neighbor on my right pushed in. Calling meant losing a big chunk of my stack if they didn’t hold up, but it wouldn’t devastate me, so I called.

My neighbor had aces and they held up.

The very next hand I’m dealt aces. The neighbor two doors down on my right raises… I think a moment, trim a toenail, then pushed. He calls and flips over pocket tens.

Deja vu. And my aces held up, too, sending him to the rail.

I made my way to the final table and as it shrunk, I looked for opportunities to apply pressure – but it seemed the cards weren’t going to cooperate. I was seeing nothing but trash.

Eventually we were down to three, and I got a few hands I could play with. Then it was heads up.

I have a definite strategy I use in heads up situations. There are specific clues I look for from my opponent, and if I see them I play my strategy accordingly. This was one of those times and it allowed me to weaken my opponent.

Zeem was no cakewalk – he definately kept me on my toes. But, I was gradually able to whittle him down, finally taking him out with a suckout – I hit two pair on the river with my A-7 against his A-Q.

Along with getting my live tourney action up to snuff, I’m eager to see a win at a tourney with a larger prize pool – say the 25K on Full Tilt, or something…

Good job, Maudie! Now that I have moved my few bucks left on Doyle’s Room to FullTilt, maybe I will get to play against you sometime soon. Then again, I’m not so sure I want to….

Hey great to see that you took your race win against me and turned it into cash. Not sure why you called me with KTo when you raised and I pushed. I guess I was involved in raising the prior 5 pots so did you put me on a pure steal?

Congrats on the win and for helping me to get to bed earlier!

Congrats on the win. I was at your table in the early going and got a very strong "final table" vibe from your play. I am not surprised to see that you took it down. My equation: Good playing + decent cards + "the vibe" + a little luck = VICTORY!!

Guin – most likely I was putting you on a steal. I’d have to look at the hand history to parse my thinking on that hand. K-T off isn’t a hand that’s in my steady repertoire, so I’m sure the circumstances framed my decision to play it like I did.
