Perspectives - poker and otherwise
Years ago when I was in grad school I took a photography class. My instructor imparted a bit of wisdom one day, that I’ve found to be applicable to more than just shooting pictures. Simply, he said “Change perspective.”
I’m currently sitting in a comfy chair in a little beach cottage in Seaside, Oregon. The whys and wherefores that brought me here at this a particular point in time will be left for another time and another blog - what I wanted to touch on, though, was how this trip has provided a bit of changed perspective.
You see, I’m without immediate access to the internet and I’m without immediate access to a casino. I’m experiencing a little bit of anxiety as a result. I’m wondering if, gasp, I may be an addict - not to poker, but to the internet. I’m more anxious about the lack of connection than the inability to check raise some donkey on Full Tilt.
Right about, oh, now you may be wondering, “If she doesn’t have access to the internet, how am I able to read this post right now?” Well, that’s because while I lack immediate access I do have not-so-immediate access via the Internet Cafe a few blocks away.
At any rate, this has given me a bit of a “changed perspective” regarding my internet use. I’m “connected” everyday for a good majority of my waking hours. I spend most of my workday on the internet and when I’m home I’m blogging, surfing, playing poker, or chatting with one or two pals.
I don’t like being un-connected… it’s making me cranky… so am I truly an internet junkie?
Arrgghhh.
I did take a nice walk on the beach this evening. But when I came back, I wanted to get on the internet so I could tell someone I took a nice walk on the beach…. and play some poker.
But, I can’t do either. I’m left with a comfy chair, my laptop, and no access to the “infi”-net.
I do have the ocean a half a block away. Not such a bad trade-off, once I step back and change my perspective, not a bad trade-off at all.

You seem a candidate for Internet Anonymous.
Just dial 1-800-NERDHEAD
See you there…
"Hello! my name is Ken. I have a problem."
"Hi, Ken."
"It has been 15-minutes since I logged in. I fell off the wagon."

Geez, I wish I could do what you’re doing and unplug for a few days.
The last time I was offline for an extended period of time was my honeymoon in 2000. The only Internet access in Jamaica was a seedy little coffee shop down the street from our resort that charged like $5 for 10 minutes and used dial-up modems. Needless to say, I read four novels that week.
Enjoy your "analog" time. The world will go on if you don’t answer email, update your blog or check the news/weather for a few days. The number of unread posts in your BlogLines might be a little daunting when you return, but it is worth it to be able to disconnect.
BTW, I am alive. I know I haven’t posted to my blog for almost a year. I’ve been unbelievably busy, to say the least.
