He’ll be bouncin’ around the room….
I have to extend another round of kudos to pal Pauly. It was disappointing to read that the ESPN gig fell through, however, BRAVO to him for not compromising.
It couldn’t have been easy to let it go. The lure of that siren’s song had to be particularly seductive. A sweet gig if ever there was one.
But, ESPN has to keep the lights on and that means keeping advertisers and sponsors happy. The suits aren’t about to risk pissing off those accounts by allowing a unique voice like Pauly’s go unmuffled.
And who would want to read diluted Pauly? Not I. I want the raw, unexpurgated polulted Pauly we all know and love. Who else will look under the poker table and scrape up all the good bits that have been dropped there?
I can get chip counts and player profiles from the numerous outlets circling the room looking for poker pro photo ops. But who else is going to give you a player profile snagged at stall three in the men’s room? Or tell me honestly how devasting it is to see your dream pushed across the table to the player across from you?
ESPN will give readers and viewers sanitized, formulaic coverage. No controversy, no depth, but will appeal to a majority, offend no one and keep the advertisers happy.
So, rock on Pauly - you’ll be my number one source for WSOP coverage, and I doubt I’ll be alone.

I am reminded of Lenny Bruce. Funny fellow. Wouldn’t compromise. Edgy social commentary and had he played poker he’d have spent more time in penalties than playing. Throwing him in jail was silly but those were the times.
Mort Saul was a contemporary that could make equally hilarious social commentary. Maybe better. He could appear on Sullivan. Don’t know if he felt he’d compromised his art. If he did, he was still capable of making me laugh.
Newhart had his records in the time and had a unique humor that had us rolling on the floor. You could play his stuff at a PTA meeting. His buddy Rickles can work blue or not in his unique manner.
Who’s muse is the pure one? Which deserves deification?
Of course you and I are the lucky ones. We’ve never had to consider compromise in our life.
