T-Town Poker

Next week I get to go on a bit of a road-trip. I have to pat myself on the back for a stellar bit of whining that spurred my bosses’ decision that allowed said road-trip.

Annually, in my line of work, our professional organization stages a conference in either Oklahoma City or Tulsa. This year it is in Tulsa - which means a) a trip out of town at someone else’s expense and b) a trip to a town with a kick-ass poker room.

When our office got the word as to this year’s location, I did a secret happy dance. Then I got word of something that made me do a second not-so-secret happy dance. Then I got word that our office wasn’t going to the conference this year and I did a tantrum dance.

The something that made me do a not-so-secret happy dance was the news that I had finally completed all the training necessary for me to receive a nicely framed certificate acknowledging that I was a bonified Professional with a capital “P.” These things are handed out at the conference luncheon and, by golly, I wanted to be there to get mine.

And then celebrate at a 1.2 table at the Cherokee Casino. Then snooze after a bit of room service and pampering at an upscale hotel… and maybe rent some porn…

So I commenced whining. At every opportunity. Eventually it paid off and I got word late last week that I could go. I’ll be the only one going from my office, and my supervisor has not missed a chance to tell me how inconvenient my absence will be, blah-de-blah, but, hey, it’s a mini-vacation I’m in need of so I don’t care. Hah!

I’m very impressed with the Cherokee Poker Room. With Scotty Nguyen as it’s poker ambassador, it has a variety of games and structures to please the poker palate. The times I’ve been there, I’ve seen tables of Omaha and Stud sprinkled amongst the Hold-em tables.

The lowest limit game is 4-8 and 4-8 with a kill pot. But, of course, no-limit tables are in abundance.

However, for the tournament player, there are numerous opportunities at Cherokee to play poker for some substantial bucks.

The first installment of the Oklahoma State Poker Championship was recently held with the winner, Hal Kirkpatrick, receiving $124,410 for his efforts. The final table was later televised statewide via Cox Communications.

Starting May 17, Scotty Nguyen hosts the third installment of the Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge. It runs through May 30. Poker divas Linda Johnson and Jan Fisher will be hosting the ladies event and the Main Event is scheduled to be televised.

Of course there are numerous weekly poker tournaments with an incentive to play that must have been gleaned from the online world. For every hour you play a cash game, you gain extra chips for the tournament.

So, after I get checked in to the hotel next Wednesday afternoon, you can lay odds that I will be on the road to Cherokee Casino within minutes of unpacking and, barring a bankroll busting session, I ought be there Thursday evening and maybe even Friday after the conference closes.
