The result of the battle between Hal Fowler and Bobby Hoff at the WSOP 1979 final table proved that even a most hopeless hand can win against a good pair of Aces, as well as how an amateur can handle a poker game against a professional and actually win the World Poker Champion title.
The pre-flop situation proved to be hopeless for Hal Fowler: he had 7♠ 6♦. And very promising for Bobby Hoff: he had a pair of Aces (A♥ A♣). Hoff raised $38.000. Fowler apparently made a mistake by calling Hoff with his almost desperate hand imaginable.
The flop came J♠ 3♣ 5♥. Hoff retained his advantage and bet $40.000 more into the pot. Fowler checked with his inside straight draw.
The turn brought the 4♣, giving nothing to Hoff, and a nut-shot straight to Fowler. Hoff moved all-in. Fowler called.
T♦ hit on the river – once again, nothing to Hoff and the title and the prize money to Fowler, who was just sitting at the table after the river, breathless.
