Comps are given as rewards for gamblers that play table/slot/pit/poker in a casino and cover food, lodging, and free-play - although most comps are for meals.
“Historically one of the reasons why people come to Vegas and gamble is because they get comps,” said David Schwartz, director of gaming research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
Clark County District Court Judge Gloria Sturman recently ruled that sales tax on free food must be paid by gamblers in Nevada.
Gamblers are hoping the casinos will pay the sales tax which in turn could keep the casinos from giving as many comps. Gambling in Las Vegas has been on the decline; Judge Sturman's ruling isn't going to increase the crowds at the tables.
