1. What poker rooms are available for a Macintosh?
Mac poker rooms are listed below, but most major sites have clients available for Macintoshes (Macs) at present, including the two largest, Full Tilt and PokerStars. PokerStars, in fact, just released its full poker client for Macs, and Full Tilt has had one available for a while.
2. Is there any difference between a poker room for Windows and one for a Mac?
Not really. There are two types of clients available for Mac users. There's software that you can download, which is how PokerStars, Full Tilt and Party Poker work, or you can play directly from the site with a Java-based client. The Java-based client runs right in your browser and requires no download. Rooms such as 888 Poker and its skins (including LuckyAce Poker) work this way.
3. Is the poker play any different on a Mac?
No. You are on the same network; you play the same players that Windows players face and have the same games/limits options. There really aren't many differences for mac poker players at all.
4. Are there any disadvantages to owning a Macintosh?
Some poker rooms still don't offer clients for Macs, including Bodog Poker. But many Macs also offer something called Boot Camp which allows you to run Windows on your Intel-based Macintosh. Boot Camp comes standard with the latest Mac operating system, 10.5.
5. Do I need to buy anything for my Macintosh?
Not really. You should have your operating system upgraded to OS X, and you should be upgraded all the way to 10.3 at least, if not later. PokerWorks recommend you buy the latest system, 10.5, as a lot of the bugs were worked out and it's only around $100 to do so. Most poker rooms, if not all, won't have clients available for anything less than 10.3. Otherwise, you will not need anything special for your Mac to run a poker room.
6. How do I install the programs?
It's really easy. Just to go the poker room's Website and download the software; make sure you download the software for your Macintosh, not Windows, and that may mean NOT just clicking OK if a room asks you to download the software, but checking out your different options in the room itself. It may take a bit of browsing to find the right software but it shouldn't be too hard. Then just download the software. You'll be presented with a choice to install the program once you download it, and you can do this by dragging the icon into the applications folder listed right next to it. That's all it takes to get started. We also recommend that you keep your favorite poker rooms listed in the "deck" of your Mac so all you have to do is click and open for easy access.
7. Do the Mac poker rooms look different?
There might be some minor cosmetic differences between Windows and Mac poker rooms, but otherwise, no, they don't look different. In fact, many times they look better, since Macs offer superior graphics and interfaces than Windows as any Mac user will tell you.
8. What about Mac / Macintosh no download options?
For players outside of the United States, there are many additional options. Pacific Poker, Party Poker and Lucky Ace Poker all offer "no download" online poker clients. PokerWorks strongly recommends the Party Poker and Lucky Ace Poker no/download options because the software is highly tested and both sites have a lot of players online at all times while also offering easy games at many levels.
You can read all about Party in our Party Poker Review. Also, don't miss our exclusive party poker bonus codes when you're signing up for an account!
If you sign up for Party Poker while on a Mac use the bonus code PWRKS500 to get a 100% deposit bonus up to $500. On Full Tilt Poker, use the Mac only bonus code PKRWORKS to get a special deposit bonus.9. I don't see a download option for Mac poker players on the Lucky Ace Poker web site?
Now, you can play online on Lucky Ace Poker right on your Mac without downloading any software! Instant Play is the latest craze sweeping Poker Room and is actually used by poker players with Macs, PC's, and mobile phones.
You'll need to create an account before playing on the Instant Play system. There's a giant Sign Up icon on the right hand side of the site. There is no downloadable Lucky Ace Poker client for Mac players.
However, keep in mind that Poker Room does not accept U.S. players.
10. Why it‘s so hard to find a mac poker room?
As most Mac users already know, it has always been a bit tricky to find good sites to play at with a Macintosh computer. It used to be that hardly any sites offered downloadable software for Macs, and the Mac user's best option was to play at one of the few poker rooms that provided "no/download" software. But this has all started to change as more and more sites have realized that Mac users are an important target audience.
If you want to play online poker on your Mac, the most available option is still no/download software. Several poker rooms offer good alternatives in this category, and most of them are ran on a Java platform. Two of the best are Pacific Poker and Hollywood Poker. Other good rooms include 24h Poker and Poker Room. All these sites offer stable and reliable software that doesn't require a download.
With the growing popularity of Apple computers, some of the Mac poker rooms have also created their own downloadable software for Mac. The first of the larger rooms to do this was Full Tilt Poker, which launched its Mac poker software in early 2006. Full Tilt was followed by Party Poker, which recently released a downloadable Mac version of its popular software. Other rooms that offer software for Mac are Bugsy's Club and Games Grid.
If you're determined to play at poker rooms that still don't have Mac-friendly software, you have some other options. You could use a PC emulator - two of the most popular are Virtual PC and iEmulator - which works pretty well, but might slow down your computer a bit. And, with its release of Leopard, the new version of OS X, Apple also released Boot Camp, software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP along with Mac OS.
As you can see, there are numerous options if you want to play online poker using your Mac. A good way to get started is by checking out the poker rooms in our top list.
