APPT Sydney Day 1b
The second day 1 of the PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Sydney Grand Final kicked off with plenty of star power, including 1998 World Champion Scotty Nguyen, Tony Hachem, Jeff Lisandro and Lee ‘Final Table’ Nelson.The day was a short one for Tony Hachem, brother to 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Joe Hachem. He got all his chips in the pot with Michael Haddad, on the river, when the board was 6♠-4♠-8♦-2♥-3♠. Hachem held 6♥-5♣ for the straight on the river, but it was no good against Haddad’s A♠-J♠ for the nut flush.
‘Aussie Sarah’ Bilney was another local favorite headed to the rail on Day 1b, when she came out on the losing end of a big hand with Jim Kilarjian. On the flop of 2♣-4♥-Q♣, Kilarjian led out and Bilney called. The 7♦ came on the turn and both players checked. The river brought the 5♠ and Bilney pushed all in. Kilarjian called and Bilney tabled K♠-Q♥, no help against Kilarjian’s pocket Kings. Jozef Berec, who took down second place in the APPT Seoul event, was also eliminated on Day 1b.
Van Marcus had a particularly turbulent couple of hands which saw him lose a ton of chips, then win a nearly identical amount to end up roughly even. In the first, Marcus re-raised over the top of an all in short stack and found one caller. Marcus bet out enough, in the dark, to put his second opponent all in, and got called. The players tabled their hands to reveal –

Opponent 2 – A♠-5♠
The flop was 5♥-7♦-2♠, and Marcus was in the catbird seat until the turn and river came down 4♦-3♥ to give both opponents a straight and leave Marcus on a short stack.
On the very next hand, Marcus rebuilt his stack by firing on every street on a board of 8♠-7♠-3♦-K♥-4♠. He rebuilt his chip stack when he tabled A♠-A♣ to scoop a monster pot. Marcus finished Day 1b in the middle of the pack, but still alive.
The late stages of the day belonged to Henrik Gwinner, who took over the chip lead in a big pot with James Potter. On the A♠-K♥-Q♥ flop, Potter checked and Gwinner bet, Potter raised, and Gwinner called. Potter check-raised again on the Q♠ turn, going all in over the top of Gwinner’s bet. Gwinner called with J♥-10♠ for the flopped straight, and Gwinner was drawing thin with A♦-K♦ for two pair. No Ace or King on the river for Potter, and he was busted, leaving Gwinner the chip leader.
Scotty Nguyen finished Day 1b strong, making a tough call on one of the last hands of the day to send Terris Preston to the rail. On the turn, with the board reading 10♥-3♥-6♠-5♣, Nguyen called Preston’s all in with pocket nines, dominating Preston’s pocket eights. The 3♥ on the river ended Preston’s tournament and vaulted Nguyen to 2nd in chips.
There were 42 players left at the end of Day 1b, including big names like Nguyen and Lee ‘Final Table’ Nelson. The top ten chip stacks looked like this –
