aces on billsMore top stars joined the field at Day 1c of the PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final in Sydney, including local stars like Billy ‘The Croc’ Argyros and Gary Benson along with world-wide superstars like Isabelle Mercier. Among the biggest names taking the field on Day 1c was Australia’s favorite son of poker, 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Joe Hachem, who helped kick off the opening ceremonies.

Mercier’s play in the Grand Final was short-lived as she ran pocket eights into Brooks Bigman’s pocket tens early in the day. No help on the board for Mercier, and she was busted in the first few levels. Glenn Stewart, a well-known professional rugby player for the Manly Sea-Eagles, also busted early on Day 1C. He found himself all in with A-K against Colin Ford’s 10♣-10♠, and hit an Ace on the flop. Unfortunately for Stewart, the flop also brought a ten for Ford that sent Stewart to the rail.

Billy ‘The Croc’ Argyros had a strong showing at this fall’s PokerNews Cup, but saw his pocket tens cracked by Bruno Portaro to end his day early. Argyros pushed all in with his tens preflop, and Portaro called with A♠-K♣. A king on the flop sent Argyros to the rail, and Portaro went deep into the night, busting Emad Tahtouh late in the day’s play. Tahtouh was behind with a big draw when he got all his money in with A♠-J♠ on a flop of J-K♠-4♠ for top pair with the nut flush draw. Portaro tabled pocket Aces and his over pair held up to bust Tahtouh.

Joe Hachem was very active in the early rounds of Day 1C, but cooled down late in the day. After making a move at the pot preflop by re-raising Chris Levick, Hachem got lucky enough to hit the 5-7♠-8 flop with his trash. Hachem led out on the flop and quickly called when Levick moved all in over the top, tabling 6♠-9 for the flopped straight.

Hachem made it through Day 1C with 54,400 in chips, putting him firmly in the bottom half of the field returning for Day 2. The survivors from the 3 Day 1 fields’ will combine for a star-studded field that includes Hachem, Scotty Nguyen, Lee ‘Final Table’ Nelson and Terrence Chan as the remaining players take their shot at the $1 Million first place prize!
