Aussie Millions Day 1c
Actors, Professors and Cricketers, oh my! The field on Day 1c of the Aussie Millions contained all three, with the occasional online superstar, world champion and Aussie rules footballer thrown in the mix for good measure. The field of roughly 270 created a total Main Event field of 780 players, one of the largest non-WSOP tournaments in the world. The $7.8 million prize pool was nothing to sneeze at either, which is why folks like Chip Jett, Howard Lederer, Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow, Shane Warne, and actor Michael Vartan (“Alias”), were gathered at the Crown Casino in Melbourne.Diminutive Anna Wroblewski had a good showing in the preliminary events at the Aussie Millions, with two final table finishes, but her run at the Main Event ended mere hours into Day 1c. After limping with pocket Kings, Wroblewski got all the money in post-flop, when her opponent made two pair on a 7-5-2 board. No help for Wroblewski, and she made an early exit.
Another early victim was Tony Hachem, who was trying to follow in the footsteps of brother Joe, (who finished his Day 1 flight near the top of the leader board). Tony Hachem turned two pair on a board of J♦-8♦-2♥-5♥, and called Jon ‘Pearljammer’ Turner’s all in push. Hachem was ahead with J♣-5♣, but Turner had plenty of outs with A♥-8♥. The 8♠ on the river was one of them, and Hachem was eliminated. Vartan, David Bach and Jeff ‘ActionJeff’ Garza were other notable early bustouts.
2007 World Series of Poker Europe Champion Annette ‘Annette_15’ Obrestad was very active early, but took two rough beats to end her tournament on Day 1c. The first hand, where she lost to a four-flush on the river, left her short-stacked, but the last hand crippled her beyond recovery. On a board of 6♥-4♥-4♦, Obrestad pushed all in with pocket Aces and found one caller holding pocket eights. An eight on the river, and Obrestad was left with one black, $100 chip. It went in soon after, and she was eliminated.
Howard Lederer flirted with the chip lead all day, finishing strong as the play drew to a close. On a flop of K♠-Q♥-3♣, Lederer’s opponent checked, Lederer bet out and his opponent check-raised him. Lederer moved all in over the top with K♥-Q♦, and his opponent called with A-K. Lederer was ahead on the flop, and sealed the deal on the turn when the Q♠ gave him a full house. Other notable survivors from Day 1c included Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow, Jon ‘Pearljammer Turner, Alex Kravchenko, and Kenna James, who made moves late in the day to end up near the top of the leader board.
