Aussie Millions Event 10 - $2,200 PLH/Omaha/Omaha Hi-Lo
As the Aussie Millions preliminary events drew to a close in preparation for Monday’s Day 1 of the Main Event, a host of top-notch mixed-game players signed up for the $2,200 Pot Limit Hold ‘Em/Pot Limit Omaha/Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo tournament. Among the big names in the field were Jimmy ‘gobboboy’ Fricke, Anna Wroblewski, Lee Nelson and Jeff Madsen. The fast pace and high variance of Omaha took out many big names early in Day 1, including Rafe Furst, Madsen, and Michael Binger.Dag Martin Mikkelsen finished Day 1 as the chip leader, and internet whiz kid Josh ‘JJProdigy’ Field continued his strong showing at the Aussie Millions by finishing strong on Day 1 to make it through the day. They were joined on Day 2 by Event #4 winner Jamie Pickering, and David Bach, who was looking for his second final table of the Aussie Millions.
Play started off fast on Day 2, as Josh Field took out Sam Di Carlo early in the first round of Hold ‘Em. Vince Moro busted soon after when JJ Hazan cracked his Kings on a board of 5♣-7♣-6♦-8♥-9♣ with his A♠-10♦. Sam Khouiss was the final table bubble boy when David Bach rivered two pair to send him home on the final table and the money bubble.
The final nine stacked up like this as the final table began -

The final table kicked off in a flurry of eliminations, with three players heading to the cashier’s cage in the first 30 minutes of play. Mick ‘The Hoon’ Stanton got all in preflop against Dag Martin Mikkelsen with 6♠-8♣-9♠-7♥, and Mikkelsen called with K♦-K♠-J♥-5♣. Mikkelsen flopped a straight on a board of 10♥-Q♥-9♦, and his straight held up to eliminate Stanton in 9th place ($4,500). Next, JJ Hazan flopped a set with A♣-Q♦-6♣-6♠ on a board of 6♦-9♥-10♥ to send Jeff Brown home in 8th place ($6,840).
Jamie Pickering pushed all in preflop with 4♦-Q♥-K♠-7♣, and David Bach called with A♠-8♣-K♣-K♦. Bach made two pair on the 8♦-A♦-Q♣ and it held to eliminate Pickering in 7th place ($9,120). JJ Hazan called off the last of his chips preflop with 7♥-7♣-9♠-8♥ after Michael Pesek raised preflop. Pesek revealed A♠-8♠-A♣-9♥, and scooped both high and low pots when the board ran out 2♥-5♦-Q♠-Q♦-3♣. Hazan picked up $13,680 for finishing in 6th place.
Josh Field was crippled after a big three-way hand with David Bach and Dag Martin Mikkelsen when he raised the pot preflop with J♠-A♥-9♣-7♥. The raise left Field with only 2,000 in chips behind, and he jokingly told his opponents “I’m folding if I don’t hit.” The action was checked to the river when Bach tabled 2♥-3♥-8♠-2♠ and took the high pot with a 6-high straight. Mikkelsen tabled ♠-A♣-10♣-4♥ for a 6-5-4-3-A low, but the dealer mistakenly shipped the low pot to Bach, who held a 6-5-4-3-2 low! Tournament officials reviewed the tape and moments later corrected the mistake and sent half the pot to Mikkelsen. Field tossed his last few chips in the middle a few hands later and busted in 5th place ($18,240), his second cash of the series and his first ever live final table.
David Bach took out Roy Winston in 4th place ($22,800) when his A♠-4♠ held up against Winston’s 8♥-9♥ on a board of 7♠-7♣-5♦-Q♦-4♥. Winston missed his inside straight draw and Bach’s pair of fours was good to drag a huge pot. Dag Martin Mikkelsen was ahead with A♠-8♠ when he got all in with Michael Pesek’s Q♦-10♦, but the flop of K♠-J♦-K♦ gave Pesek the open-ended straight flush draw. The 8♥ on the turn improved Mikkelsen’s hand, but the 6♦ on the river gave Pesek the flush and Mikkelsen $27,360 for 3rd place.
Pesek took a small chip lead into the heads-up match, but he and David Bach were content to play small ball for nearly an hour before tangling for the last time. Pesek called from the button on the last hand, and Bach raised the pot. Pesek called to see the flop of 7♦-3♠-6♠. Bach led out, and Pesek raised the pot. Bach called for all of his chips, and Pesek revealed 8♠-K♣-7♥-6♣ for top two pair, and Bach tabled A♦-Q♦-8♥-10♥ for a gut shot straight draw and plenty of over cards. The 9♥ on the turn filled Bach’s straight, but the 6♥ on the river gave Pesek a full house and busted Bach in 2nd place ($45,600). 21-year-old Michael Pesek picked up $79,800 for his victory in Event #10 of the 2008 Aussie Millions .
