Aussie Millions Main Event Day 1a
Last year’s 3rd-place finisher, Andy Black, kicked off the Main Event of the 2008 Aussie Millions in stride, following
in his successful footsteps, finishing Day 1a with the chip lead over other notable survivors like Erik Seidel, Raymond Rahme, Allen Cunningham, and Tom ‘Durrr’ Dwan. 215 players took the field on the first Day 1 of the Main Event, including Gavin Smith, John Juanda, Eli Elezra, and Tony G. Gavin Smith, in particular, drew a tough starting table with Juanda, Dag Martin Mikkelsen, David Grey, and Brandon Schaefer. 2007 runner-up Jimmy ‘gobboboy’ Fricke also had a tough starting table, joining the likes of Rahme, Gary Benson, Cunningham, and Lee Watkinson. Fricke picked up a win in Event #3 of the Aussie Millions, but busted on Day 1a when he ran into Raymond Rahme’s pocket Aces. Fricke was joined on the rail by such notable players as Liz Lieu, Steve Zolotow, Mike Sexton, Gavin Smith, and Lee Watkinson.
Tony G. made it successfully through Day 1a, but took a rough beat at the hands of Nick MacMillan in a three-way hand with ‘Aussie’ Sarah Bilney. Bilney put her short stack in preflop with pocket nines, and MacMillan called. Tony G re-raised from the button, and MacMillan made the call. MacMillan checked the K♦-2♥-8♥ flop, and Tony G. bet enough to put MacMillan all in. MacMillan insta-called with 2♦-2♣ for the flopped set, and Tony G tabled Aces, cracked by MacMillan’s two-outer. Bilney’s pocket nines didn’t improve, and she was eliminated.
Battle of the Blogger Tournament winner Eric ‘jeciimd’ Chadwick took time off from his medical practice to make the trip down under. Chadwick doubled up late on Day 1a when his pocket Aces held up against an opponent’s pocket Kings.
When the tournament ended for Day 1a, there were 91 runners left standing, with Andy Black standing taller than anyone with 167,800 in chips. The top ten chip stacks looked like this at the end of Day 1a -
