The anniversary was on Saturday, November 22 - not the kind of anniversary that is celebrated but one that is mourned and pondered. Stu Ungar was somewhat of a legend in the poker community, and his death in 1998 not only signified the end of an era but pointed specifically to the dangers of a particular kind of lifestyle.

When the World Poker Tour first came onto the poker scene, it led the way in television programming and created a tournament circuit that brought people into the game in a unique way. While the WPT has had its problems through the years, as does any publicly-owned business, it continues to find niches in the poker market in which to thrive. WPT China is one of those.

On Friday, November 14, 2008, Clonie Gowen officially began legal proceedings in the form of a lawsuit against Tiltware LLC and Full Tilt Poker. The case was filed in the Nevada District Court, and in essence, Gowen is seeking damages in the amount of $40 million.

The boy who cried wolf is crying again. Online poker player Josh Field, who is better known by the moniker JJProdigy, has posted another apology on an online forum. And it seems to have fallen flat because even those who believed his last open apology may not put much stock in the latest one. As the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

An all-too common theme for the online poker community, cheating has again surfaced, and this time it was at the hands of a well-respected member of the online poker industry. Brian Townsend, co-owner and manager of CardRunners and Full Tilt “red pro,” has admitted to and apologized for multi-accounting with online accounts on PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker.

After months of efforts to ban poker machines by the owners of the South Sydney Leagues sports club in Australia, the club’s recently-elected board delivered a decisive vote against the measure. The club’s owners, Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court, were disappointed but vowed to find other ways to reduce the negative impact of the “pokies” on the club’s patrons.
